Shug Jordan told me in 1973 that the South views football as a release from the horror of the American Civil War and being invaded, destroyed, impoverished. It pits family against family, state against state, school against school. It’ is no holds bar….

But when an SEC school plays anyone outside the conference, whether a non conference game or a bowl game, The conference takes pride in supporting other conference members against the “Yankees”, (His words, not mine).

Do we hate each other, no more than Ohio State hates Michigan, or USC hates UCLA, or Oregon State hates Oregon, Texas, well every one hates Texas.(lol)

Bama, of course. And I hate some of the other teams in the conference–our internal rivalries are more fierce than you can imagine. But this Us-v.-Them thing is rooted in the history of the region. My dad always pulled for Bama first, then Auburn, then any other SEC team playing. It took many years for me to understand that, and I still can’t root for Auburn except in extraordinary circumstances. So I’m not surprised the conference loyalty puzzles outsiders. It just comes with the territory for us.
