Johnny Heisman is the first frosh AP Player of the Year

Johnny Manziel AP

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel made history when he became the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy. His postseason accolades since have included first-team selections in the AP and FWAA All-American teams.

Now, he’s been named the AP Player of the Year, collecting 31 votes to become the first freshman to ever receive the honor. Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o finished second with 15 votes.

It’s been a good few weeks to be Manziel. Bring home a Heisman… get selected to a few All-American teams… make the late night talk show rounds…

Meet Megan Fox.

Hate him so much right now, y’all.

    Congrats to Johnny, but he’s not a “freshman”. He’s either a red-shirt freshman or a sophomore, especially because he enrolled early in January, 2011. If this was his very first year, he would be a “true freshman”. Please stop peddling the misleading “freshman” moniker.

    All the while Manti Te’o has his eyes on a a National Championship.

    Good for Johnny, but he has A LOT to live up to his next 3 years with all this early recognition.

    If he doesn’t win a title or even the SEC West then this year was clearly taken out of context.

  7. goodfieldnohit says: Dec 18, 2012 2:13 PM

    How do 4600 yds and 43 TDs get taken out of context?

    And the Domers are going to get run out of the stadium by Bama.

    He’s not a frickin’ freshman! He’s a sophomore just like Hanratty and Clements before the rule was changed to allow freshman eligibility. He’s well deserving of the accolades but I’m sick of hearing he’s a freshman!

  17. dinklespiel says: Dec 18, 2012 8:14 PM

    Teo didn’t have to live up to any hype for three years. Probably why he played so well his senior year.

  18. millersirish1986 says: Dec 18, 2012 8:59 PM

    Megan fox is not looking like her last name anymore…looks like jennifer has no body…hes a redshirt freshmen so on the football field he is a freshmen get over it…and teo was the most highly recruited defensive player coming out of high school so there was a ton of pressure on him along with all the hype to go with it and he has delivered ten fold…and for those who are sick of sec haters, we are all sick of notre dame haters but it comes with being the best…on january 7th the irish will rise again….GO IRISH!!!!

  19. thegamecocker says: Dec 18, 2012 9:51 PM

    @miller…

    I’m so sick of ND fans. You guys remind me of Clemson fans about 4 years ago! You people are lucky to have not lost to Pitt! You beat Navy, Wake, BC, “powerful” Purdue, mediocre Mich St, BYU, and a down-trodden, Southern Cal. I hope The Tide destroys ND and makes you STFU already.

    Seriously, that’s all it takes to make you sick?

    He redshirted last season…his first at A&M. That makes him a redshirt freshman this season. How hard is that to understand?

  21. 2fleas says: Dec 18, 2012 10:56 PM

    Well deserved. If you are going to comment on someone’s looks, I think you should post a picture of yourself also. He’s not a model, he’s a football player.

  22. amosalanzostagg says: Dec 18, 2012 11:41 PM

    To the Golden Domers and the haters of Manziel, just some actual facts.
    Look as a red shirt freshman starting his first collegiate game against a National Championship caliber team

    DATE OPP RESULT CMP ATT YDS CMP% LNG TD INT RAT
    9/8 Florida L 20-17 23 30 173 76.7 28 0 0 125.1

    another National Championship caliber team

    10/20 LSU L 24-19 29 56 276 51.8 27 0 3 82.5

    Of course against My Alabama team , then ranked #1

    11/10@Alabama W 29-24 24 31 253 77.4 42 2 0 167.3

    Pretty impressive numbers for a red shirt freshman, sophomore, junior or senior against stout competition.

    I purposely left out his running numbers because this shows how just effective Manziel was this last year,

    +++++++++++++++++++++++

    Last I looked, the Heisman is not a lifetime achievement award, it’s not a humanitarian award, its not a leadership award, its not a most valuable player award.

    Its the awards for the most oustanding college football player of the year. OF THE YEAR…. In 2012, Johnny Manziel was quite obviously the most outstanding player as evidenced by 2 All America teams, the AP Player of the Year, SEC Player of the Year, and of course, the Heisman Trophy.

    @Pinchegringo12
    Or you are a domer that is just pissed off that Te’o didn’t win.

    @gamecocker

    I remind you of a clemson fan 4 yrs ago because clemsons been relevant and in the national title hunt…i was saying that people hate the sec because there the best and people hate notre dame even though they havent been the best in recent years they are #1 this year…people hate what they are not and what they will never become…i root for my team and i am a fan and a student of football..i dont bash the sec because well whats to bash, the top flight teams in that conference are just that top flight but yes there are bottom feeders just like every other conference…i agree with brian when he says he is trying to build a sec team by way of a great defense and a stout running game but for those of you who doubt the irish then maybe you havent watched them play…dont just look at final score but at the maturation of golson at the qb position because this kid can flat play…GO IRISH!!!

  26. thegamecocker says: Dec 20, 2012 9:20 AM

    @millersirish

    Thank-you for your civil response and post. QB Golson is maturing well and the NC game will be a huge stage for him to perform. Of course playing at ND Stadium is also a pressure-packed environment because the expectations are very high. Building a solid team starting with defense and running game is certainly a recipe for success. In the NC game, I think the team that controls time of possession will ultimately win. On balance I think ‘Bama’s more difficult schedule of playing SEC teams will prevail. Also, ‘Bama has been on this stage more often in the past 5 years than ND has. I think ND will play well but will lose a close game. Good luck in the game. I hope you find this post as respectful to you as yours was to me.

  27. millersirish1986 says: Dec 20, 2012 11:25 AM

    @gamecocker
    Bama has definatly been on this stage a hell of a lot more then the irish…everyone talks about how their schedule was week but before the season it was the toughest and i didnt look this up but i believe 10 to 11 teams are bowl eligible and they get everyones best shot week in and week out…there are keys to this game just like any other and if the irish do what they do and do it well i believe they can win…being born in 86 this is by far the most athletic team that i have seen from the irish that i can remember anyway in my lifetime…looking forward to a great game and always and forever GO IRISH!!

  28. thegamecocker says: Dec 20, 2012 1:24 PM

    @millersirish

    Look up the ND team of 1966. They shared the then mythical NC with Michigan St. That season, both teams went unbeaten but for one tie: a 10-10 game between the two teams. I think Nick Eddy was the star RB for the Domers. It was an epic game and one that ND supporters will always remember. I also think they destroyed USC that year in Los Angeles, 51-0. John Huart may have been the QB and Jack Snow the All-America wide-out. Again, best of luck in the NC game. Roll Tide.

  29. 8to80texansblog says: Dec 20, 2012 4:27 PM

    Alright all this niceness and pleasantries need to stop…

    Both teams suck, I think the Northern Ill would beat them both on a neutral field.

    Go…

    Thank-you for your civil response and post. Blah, blah, blah….I particularly enjoy the Long Horn Network and I intend to subcribe to it if and when it is offered on Direct TV. I think DeLoss Dodds is a genius, Mack Brown an excellent football coach, and the City of Austin one of the nicest places I’ve never visited. I have heard wonderful things about it though. Great restaurants and music, and most of all, people like you! I hear it is even nicer and more diverse than New York City. 8to80texasns blogger, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your wonderful Family the most blessed holiday season you have ever experienced. May your life be filled with only joy and happiness and all the gifts life brings. I would like to be your friend and a friend to the Millersirish blogger as well. Hopefully we can all just get along! Your good buddy, The Gamecocker!

    I’m not sure how to respond to that…I’m not sure if you’re trying to be nice because you think I’m a longhorn, or trying to rude since you know I’m an Aggie…?

    Either way, Austin is a great city, UT is a good university, DeLoss Dodds is an idiot, and Mack Brown has done less with more than any other coach I can think of.

    Happy Holidays to all, the word should be ending any minute so….

    BEAT THE HELL OUTTA t.u.! A WHOOP!!!!!!!

  32. thegamecocker says: Dec 21, 2012 1:31 PM

    @8to80texans

    Didn’t know you were an Aggie. Insert Texas Station for Austin; Insert Kevin Sumlin for Mack Brown; Insert Hyman for Deloss Dodds. Re-read post. Have a great holiday and beat OU in Cotton Bowl. The Gamecocker
