Academic problems will keep Ducks lineman home for the Fiesta Bowl

Kenjon Barner, Marcus Mariota, Nick Cody AP

A looming meeting with the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions isn’t the only problem Oregon. Now, two linemen didn’t make the grade for the Ducks’ upcoming Fiesta Bowl appearance against Kansas State, so to speak.

In a statement released by the athletic department Friday night, Chip Kelly announced that senior offensive lineman Nick Cody would not be heading to Glendale, Ariz., for the game after failing to meet the minimum academic standards for the semester. Additionally, walk-on junior defensive lineman Axel McQuaw did not qualify.

But Cody is the more significant loss. He started six games in 2012. Ironically enough, Cody received an honorable mention in the Pac-10 all-academic team of 2009 according to his bio on Oregon’s website. So, there’s that.

With a graduation success rate of 64(52 federal), it’s a wonder they get enough players to suit up to play a game at all.

Sad really. This guy is a senior and should know he is not going to the NFL. To let his grades slip to that degree when he needed to have begun thinking about the rest of his life is just not good. Now he will not even have the memory of the last game to last him in the whatever career he can muster.

I would hope that once he is out of football he will be able to bring his grades up sufficiently to graduate and get his Journalism degree. Football is very time- consuming on the players and not everyone can walk and chew gum at the same time.

The Ducks should check the NFL waiver wire. They certainly have the financial resources.
