Getty ImagesOn Christmas Day, Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio was optimistic Johnny Adams would be full-go when the Spartans resumed practice Wednesday.
A couple of days later? Pessimism reigns when it comes to the starting cornerback.
Adams suffered a turf toe injury in practice following the end of the regular season and has been extremely limited ever since. Not only is Adams not 100-percent for a resumption of practice, Dantonio downplayed the possibility of the senior even being available for the Spartans’ Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl game against TCU.
“I do not expect Johnny to play, to be honest with you,” Dantonio told the Detroit Free Press. “You always hold out hope that he may play, but I just don’t know. We’ll have to see come game time, but my expectations are that (he won’t).”
If Adams is indeed sidelined, it would be a tremendous loss for the Spartans’ secondary. Adams started all 12 games this season, and totaled 37 starts the past three years. After tying for the team lead in interceptions with three, he was named first-team All-Big Ten by conference coaches.
Mitchell White would likely take Adams’ place in the starting lineup.
