Virginia Tech rallies to beat Rutgers in overtime

Russell Athletic Bowl - Rutgers v Virginia Tech Getty Images

So far, most of this year’s bowl games have been relatively exciting. That wasn’t quite the case with the Russell Athletic Bowl between Rutgers and Virginia Tech.

The game featured more punts (21) than Virginia Tech had rushing yards (4), yet the Hokies were able to come back from a 10-0 deficit to beat Rutgers in overtime 13-10. Virginia Tech avoids a losing season since 1992 and Rutgers fails to secure its third 10-win season in history.

Neither Logan Thomas nor Gary Nova was able to complete 50 percent of their passes and combined for three interceptions. In fact, the Scarlet Knights’ only touchdown came on a defensive forced fumble in the end zone on VT’s first drive of the game.

Yeah, ugly.

So rather than try to recap one of the single worst games of the bowl season thus far, we’ve decided to pass off that job to someone who can paint the picture far more effectively and humorously: The Russell Athletic Bowl Twitter handle.

(By the way, if you’re in to the social media thingy, the Russell Athletic Bowl Twitter handle is all kinds of amazing. See below.)

This game set offensive football back at least 50 years. These teams were PATHETIC. I felt sorry for Joe Tessitore on ESPN trying to make the game seem at least a tiny bit watchable.

I thought the Ohio/ULM game was bad but THIS game was the worst.

Brian Stinespring is the OC (cause he’s been there ten years), but Mike O’Cain calls the plays (former .500 coach at NC State in the mid to late 90s). I dont get it either, though I guess they arent gone, yet, because Beamer has enough say in the program and likes them enough to keep them there.

the Belk Bowl seemed to be constant motion with 82 points scored (14 in the last 74 seconds) credit the duke team that no one thouoght had a chance with coming into the game with a chip on the shoulder. also credit the UC team that realized that the Dukies werent going to rollover and the result was a seasaw battle in the second half.

I would like the last 3.5 hours of my life back. Not because of the game. But because I had to look at that castrated chicken on the side of the VT helmets. #NOBUENO!!!!!!

The Rutgers QB has been awful the last six games. He has lost his confidence and his mechanics are off the charts bad. Only thing worse was the RU Head Case….I mean Head Coach who refused to play the back-up QB who was the starting QB in high school that had Marcus Lattimore as RB! This young man, Chas Dodd, is a class act who has tremendous leadership quality. But Rutgers Head Coach is an intractable knucklehead who does not know how to use his assets! Horrible display by Gar Nova and Kyle Flood!

Chas Dodd is a young man who was the incumbent starter…until beaten out by Nova. Dodd is absolute garbage. Hes as useful as Lattimore’s ACL.

Both teams should just give the money back.

Sooooo glad I recorded it and could fly through it.

Oh, now that’s not nice! I doubt you even know Chas Dodd or even heard of him. I think you are trying to attack me from another post I wrote….and to be perfectly honest, you are so INSIGNIFICANT, I cannot quite remember what it was that so stimulated you to write this stupidity. Dodd deserved to be given a chance because he is much more mobile than Nova and is not concerned about getting hit. No need for you to respond…just hit the thumbs down button saving yourself time to think with that wee-little brain you have.

RUSSELL ATHLETIC Bowl and both teams are sponsored by NIKE? Best tweet of the list. If I’m an athletic wear company, I’d make a point of only inviting teams that wear my gear, assuming there are 2 six-win teams that would qualify. What a farce. Would love those publicity pictures. “Hold up that RUSSELL ATHLETIC Bowl trophy, please… just make sure it covers your Nike logo, okay Coach?” What an embarrassment to Russell Athletic.
