How about to protect Corbett who got over 600,00 dollars from Second Mile or the Chair of the BoT of Second Mile who was also on the BoT of PSU and goy over 20 million in construction contracts from PSU or the Chair of BoA and on the BoT of Second Mile and previously on the BoT of PSU who is Freeh's boss.
The NCAA is ignoring academic fraud at UNC because no media sources are covering it, Miami U seems to be walking away from a host of illegal benefits for players, because well everyone knows what Miami U stands for.

The sanctions levied against PSU have really nothing to do with what the NCAA is designed to control. 1998 the Centre County DA elected not to press charges against Sandusky when he admitted he did something wrong. PSU made him a coach emeritus, not the sports programs, not Paterno. The administration gave him free access to the sports complex, not Paterno, not the football program.
The NCAA reacted to the media lynch mob, instead of following its own rules. Emmert talks about a football culture yet look at the salaries of coaches, the amount of money from bowl games and championship games.
The NCAA is actually a problem - it pretends to be about student athletes when all it is does is make money. It follows its rules when easy to do so, but avoids other issues. Emmert when Chancellor of LSU stated that as the football program so went the University - football culture much? Look at the pass rates of student athletes - PSU is always in the top tier of D-I schools in graduating athletes.
Letting the legal system deal with Sandusky and those who hid him is what eh NCAA should have done. By-the-way according to the PA Attorney General Paterno followed the law - he committed no crimes.
I wish Corbett would not have re-opened this scab, but maybe what comes out of it is the re-organziation of the NCAA to actually do what it is chartered to do - protect student athletes and maintain the levels of support that can be offered to student athletes. Who knows under the light of law the NCAA may discover that what Freeh et al. wrote is not correct, and then can the NCAA fix their error? So maybe Emmert and the leaders of the NCAA should pay a 60 million dollar fine to restore the name of PSU? By acting without a complete legal investigation being conducted the NCAA and Emmert may guilty of many things - wouldn't that be a bitch/

Explain to me how punishing the psu football program helps the children in this case.

Punishments frequently have little to do with the victims. Indeed, charges are frequently filed and pursued in cases when the victim is uncooperative, such as domestic violence. Are you implying that if the boy from the shower said he didn't want to see Sandusky in jail that charges should never of been filed?

The closest equivalent to the Penn State scandal is the 2003 murder of Baylor basketball player Patrick Dennehy by his teammate Carlton Dotson. Murder is also a criminal matter just like child molestation, but just like in the Penn State scandal, Baylor got in trouble because the coach lied about various matters in an effort to avoid scandal. Is your contention that there should be no penalty from the NCAA for covering up criminal behavior that would be harmful to the athletic department?

What would make me happy, boondock, is if Joe Paterno had been man enough to end the molestation of children by taking action. But that ship has sailed.

The man you all knew was nothing more than a self-preserving coward who withered in the face of real adversity. He chose to save his own hide instead of protecting innocent children from a monster whose fate lay in Paterno's hands.

You can think all you want that justice was served for him, but it was served no more than it is for a suicide bomber. And this suicide bombers' last public words were "We are Penn State!".

A few people covered it up not the entire athletic department. They covered it up to save themselves, not the football program. The cover up did nothing to give the penn state football program a competitive advantage. The NCAA had no right to impose sanctions for a criminal matter. At the begining of this there was talk about taking penn states accreditation away. That would have been pretty hurtful to the students and university and probably led to students choosing other schools which does hurt the entire university. I am sorry but that was absolutely ridiculous. There are a few people who were responsible and they are being dealt with by the justice system which is how it should be. Explain to me how punishing the psu football program helps the children in this case. Keep in mind before you start calling me all the nasty things some of you keep calling the people of PA that i too was a victim of sexual abuse as a child. I sympathize with those kids more than you will ever understand. I hope the people responsible for what happened pay the harshest penalty possible and i know that sandusky himself didn't nearly get what he deserves. A FEW people at psu allowed this to happen not all of them. This is and always has been a criminal matter. It was never something that the NCAA should have stuck its nose into. And for all or you with the clever nicknames for all of us in PA or that are associated with PSU, there are pediphiles in your state and your town, they are everywhere. By your rationale you are all as responsible for them as those of us who happened to live in the same state or attend the same university that Jerry Sandusky once coached at. As a vicitim of abuse myself i find it disgusting that some of you idiots are now labeling me as an abuser or a pervert because i went to penn state and live in PA.

Datdangdrew, another good point. Tattoo gate was pathetic, I agree. But the players did receive illegal benefits that other students did not receive. No matter how small, still a violation but not a crime. Hence the NCAA authority. The NCAA and the media blew it up and tressel, who is an excellent coach, had to take the fall and lost his job. One is a violation, the other a crime. One is much worse and punishable in a court of law. The other, only punishable by the NCAA. Again it is complicated and I hope you can understand the difference. Tressel got fired, players suspended, but no jail time. PSU the guilty will die in prison. That is the difference.

i would also add that if you truly believe that PSU got a raw deal then you should also believe that OSU and jim tressel got jobbed for some tattoos and an ensuing cover up. which because it happened off the field it held no "competitive advantage" qualities. which, if you are a rational man, you would understand why that line of thought is fallacy.

stop fighting this. you have only your leaders to blame. be happy it wasn't worse, because the were a lot of people that wanted the death penalty to come down, considering this was worse in crime and went on even longer than the SMU situation.

This is only going to get uglier for Penn State. Just when the story had died down, it will now explode again with more depositions, new details emerging, further accusations, etc.

It's going to be extremely hard for the politicians to avoid looking like they're standing up for a child molester. I can imagine this backfiring big-time. Topping it all off, if the reports I've seen are true and the fines were paid out of the university's endowment fund, the state won't have any standing to sue because there won't have been any tax dollars involved. This looks like a total grandstand play.

Child rape was covered up and allowed to continue in order to protect a football program. Kids were raped because the people in charge at Penn State believed the reputation of the football team was more important.

That is an NCAA matter. Are you guys trying to suggest that outing a member of the Athletic Department as an active pedophile would not have hurt the program? Of course it would have, that's why Joe Pa and those below him in the pecking order kept it under wraps. So then Penn State did gain competitively from the cover up, and your argument is more of the same head-in-the-sand crap we saw months ago.

Ben Johnson. Wow! How 1984 of you. But we can use him as an example. He was stripped of his medal like lance Armstrong for cheating. Gaining a competitive advantage through PEDs. That would be a violation. However if Canada's ex tack coach raped 10 plus boys, the Olympics could not take a medal for that. Even though child rape is far worse than PEDs! PED= violation punishable by sport governing body, child rape = felony punishable in a court of law. Again it may me difficult to understand but it is the truth. NCAA will lose.

alright, if the crux of your argument is that child rape is okay in the halls of penn state as long as it is supervised by the athletic department due to a technicality...

i guess you got me there. i have no idea how this may play out in court but if there is anything left in regards to justice in the justice system this ruling stands and the lawsuit gets laughed out of court.

if the opposite happens i don't want to hear a PEEP from you about Random U getting caught with mobsters in the department running an illegal gambling ring.

It's not about being a sports fan or not. The NCAA has no authority over sex crimes period. They are not the criminal justice system. They can not impose fines for criminal offenses. The job of the NCAA is to maintain competitive balance between its members. PSU did not gain any competitive advantage in any sport from sanduskys horrible crimes. You may not like to hear that but it is the truth. The NCAA will lose in court.

IT HAPPENED UNDER THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENTS WATCH.

how is that unrelated to the program!? NCAA decisions are for the greater good of college athletics, PSU fan... not to deal with winning and losing. so if a program has an AD that is running a gambling ring the NCAA should overlook it!?

get some perspective, man. this is wrong and it was ran under your AD and coaches watch! FFS!!

That's the thing it had nothing to do with the football team or any other sport. Crimes were committed by an ex-coach and in no way gave psu a competitive advantage. Child rape is the worst crime there is and Sandusky will die in prison. But it is not an NCAA matter, no matter how despicable the situation is. You may not be able to grasp that or be able to separate and punish the guilty party but the US fed court will. The NCAA overstepped their authority and will have to answer in court. Just like Sandusky and the previous administration must answer for their crimes.
