Longtime assistant reportedly dismissed as staff shakeups continue at WVU

More changes are coming for West Virginia’s coaching staff following a 7-6 season that ended with a disastrous Pinstripe Bowl loss to Syracuse.

Per WVMetroNews.com, Mountaineers outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Steve Dunlap was dismissed Saturday by head coach Dana Holgorsen.

The reported decision comes about a month after Holgorsen (pictured) “parted ways” with cornerbacks coach Daron Roberts following the regular season and promoted Keith Patterson to defensive coordinator while demoting of Joe DeForest as part of the other shakeups on the coaching staff. Roberts’ former position has not yet been filled.

Dunlap has been a part of the WVU program as player and coach for a combined 26 years, serving as defensive coordinator for the program under former coach Don Nehlen from 1991-2000. He returned to Morgantown in the post-Rich Rodriguez years as a safeties and assistant head coach and was the final member of Bill Stewart‘s coaching staff to still be employed by Holgorsen.

Seeing as DeForest has special teams experience from his time at Oklahoma State, it is presumed he will pick up that responsibility from Dunlap.
