Now you're talking girl!! I thoroughly enjoyed last evening and particularly liked the good sportsmanship displayed by both teams. The ND fans, not so much. But you know all those Defensive Awards that Manti T'eo won? I would think that if the voting were held today, a guy named Jadeveon Clowney would be taking home most of that hardware. That was one of the most brutal but legal tackles I have ever seen. I am thankful the Michigan RB was able to walk away after that. I'm confident that hit will be remembered for a long time.

Congratulation to the Crimson Tide and the SEC!

LOL ... yes, LSU is almost blasphemous :) It's Alabama! So I am really on pins and needles right now, counting down the minutes until 8:30. Of course, as a lifelong fan, I've been through many of these dramas since Bear passed. And Saban's name is constantly batted around. None of that really gets to me--probably because I grew up on Coach Bryant and know I'll never see the like again.

I get more antsy over pro coaching changes. But as a Steelers fan, that's not something I have to face often--at least with the head coach. Right now, I'm honestly more concerned about who's going to replace Sean Kugler as Pittsburgh's offensive line coach than I am about whether Saban is going back to the NFL.

Deb...thanks. You have always been fair minded...which is why even when we disagree i bit i always have to stop and think about what you said. Your last sentence....i laughed because that is so true. It did involve my team and is so much worse..grrrr. totally agree it seemed like it took so long, especially when you are waiting on pins and needles. We had some big recruits really sitting on the fence, so the weekend seemed like it took forever! LSU..right? Born at Fort Polk, so they are 2nd in my book. ( and if LSU was almost blasphemous and my memory off---sincere apologies.)

First, thank you for the positive feedback on my comments in general.

Second, you're right. I really don't know much about Chip Kelly at all. And you're also right that a weekend isn't much time to consider your options with a couple of pro teams. As we go about our lives, stopping occasionally to read and comment on these updates, time here seems to race. Somehow it seems as though these teams have been negotiating with Kelly for a week, rather than a weekend.

In retrospect, I've probably been too hard on Kelly. I've been thinking he wouldn't have taken the meetings if he weren't ready to make the jump to the pros. However, when you're talking about changing careers, moving your family across country, and going from a relatively stable job to the volatile world of NFL coaching, I can understand wanting to give the move careful consideration. Perhaps if San Diego--a program with a talented quarterback in a highly liveable city--had come calling, he might have made a different decision. It could just be that the Eagles and Browns didn't meet his needs.

Still ... I'm glad this drama didn't involve my team.

I almost always agree with Deb on her views...this one..nope. Part of it is I do not think you know Chip Kelly. What he always said is that this would be a fact finding mission, and anyone who thinks the man would not have literally hundreds of questions does not know Chip. How much of the time was simply BS time? For Chip to consider leaving a pretty nice gig at Oregon, he was going to have to be sure. Last year when the reports came out, Tampa Bay said he had accepted the offer and then Chip changed his mind. He says he NEVER accepted their offer. Why is it so hard to believe that Cleveland was just spinning things that they had a near deal? Chip, like most college coaches still playing has been occupied with the college game. When he finally has time to sit down and be serious, OMG, he took 7 hrs of a club's time..so of course he must have been going to sign with them? Wow, when I was in the position of hiring people, we took about 10 hrs of their time..and we didn't offer jobs to all of them. Chip appears to be looking for the perfect fit, if he is going to leave. Most of us Oregon fans do not fault him for that.
Sometimes I wanted him to hurry up already due to recruits and all, but taking 1 flipping weekend to check things out, to make a life altering decision- just does not seem like a bad thing to do. It certainly does not seem like game playing, or teasing, or any of the negative connotations Deb and many have. Actually seems like responsibility to me...to both who is is employed by ( Oregon) and to future employers.

The difference is that Brett Favre was a proven commodity. Chip Kelly isn't a proven anything when it comes to NCAA championships, and certainly not the NFL.

I love both the college and pro games. And I have no problem with a man considering his options. But when you are in negotiation for more than SEVEN hours with two different teams, you've gone beyond considering whether you'd like to coach at the pro level. You've said, "You bet I'll go to the the NFL" and gotten into the nitty-gritty of contract specifics. To then say, "Whoa, changed my mind," is like stripping down, putting on the condom, then deciding you're just not in the mood. It's game-playing. It's unprofessional. And it jerked around two teams that could have been concentrating their energies on coaches who were serious.

I agree with #bamasleeper. This guy is going to get himself the reputation as being the Brett Favre of college football coaches.

I'm not much of an NFL fan to begin with, so this might sound biased, but why would anyone leave a place like Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, LSU, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, etc., for a job where you're dealing with the egos of multi-millionaires? Guys like Kelly, Saban, Miles, Meyer, Stoops, Brown, etc., they have the proverbial world-by-the-short-hairs. They're revered. Some of these guys could run for Governor in their states AND WIN. Besides, is there anything that keeps you more youthful than living in a college town?

There's nothing wrong with wanting to see what your options are. Actually, it's a sign of intelligence. Just because some hack reporters are releasing these "Sources say he's practically signing the contract right now" garbage stories, fans are feeling all disrespected when he doesn't sign with their team. But look at his options this year: The Browns are constantly in turmoil, they have a new owner and a whole new front office. And they have a senior citizen QB who would be running his college offense. The Eagles just fired a coach that 28 other teams would take in a heartbeat. They have a bunch of underperforming players who can't stay healthy including an aging QB who throws his team under the bus. Those aren't good options. He's wise to pass this year but he better understand there is no ideal spot to land in the NFL for a first time coach. He has to have the confidence and ego to turn those programs into a winner. Doesn't sound like he has that right now.

Great analogy, but I would say in this situation and in the literal sense, the wife who keeps waiting hopefully then taking him back is the bigger quack.

Two different planets as to handling the players, and to their approach to the game. I would stay with college even if it were a lot less money, which of course it often isn't.

When you look at the teams he interviewed with none of them have a QB or the players to run his style of offense.

He would more or less have to build a team from scratch.

I'm sure he asked for the moon money wise and wanted full control. Seems the teams he talked to were not willing to give him his demands.

There's only 3 jobs worth pursuing in the NFL - Steelers, Giants and Pats. Those three teams have ownership that stands behind their coach come hell or high water. Good job by Kelly sticking to his guns. Anyone taking a job with any of the other 29 owners should demand a 10-year, iron-clad contract.
