Alabama clobbers Notre Dame for third BCS championship in four years

Discover BCS National Championship - Notre Dame v Alabama Getty Images

Nick Saban‘s coachspeak was at a championship level too heading into halftime of the BCS national title against Notre Dame. “We still have 3o more minutes of football,” Saban said, his team up 28-0.

Technically, Saban was right,  but that final 30 minutes was more of a formality. Alabama had unofficially locked up another BCS championship. A couple of hours later, Saban was hoisting the Coaches’ Trophy after his second-ranked Tide knocked off No. 1 Notre Dame 42-14, giving the program its third BCS championship in four years.

There are a lot of adjectives one could use to describe what Alabama did to the Irish in Miami. Some are illegal in certain states, but it was Brent Musburger who probably described it best when he said “What a road kill.”

Things began favoring the Tide immediately when the offense took just three minutes on its opening possession to drive 82 yards in five plays to score first. Alabama’s offense was so balanced and efficient that it finished with exactly 264 yards passing and rushing. That would be courtesy of the Tide’s offensive line. A.J. McCarron usually had all day to throw it (and to open receivers) while Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon both rushed for over 100 yards.

Conversely, Notre Dame’s top-10 defense was helpless to do anything. The best hit on McCarron all night? From his center, Barrett Jones in an odd, late-game scuffle.

It’s no big deal now. Alabama is in the middle of one of the best runs in college football history. Surely Jones and McCarron turned those shoves into hugs.

We’ll have more coming from tonight’s game.

What a complete domination by Bama.

  3. roni says: Jan 7, 2013 11:50 PM

A friend of mine said it best on Facebook earlier.

If that has been a Pee-wee football game. They would’ve stopped the game and checked all of the Alabama players birth certificates.

    ROLL TIDE

    Congrats

    Alabama sucks.

  6. drexelvol says: Jan 7, 2013 11:52 PM

notre dame thought they could play one of the service academies for the Nation Championship game.

They absolutely had no business being out there with the big boys from the SEC. Oregon most likely should have been in the game instead of notre dame. Now that would have been a good game.

  7. gatorprof says: Jan 7, 2013 11:53 PM

Congrats to Bama and their fans on an absolute dynasty that likely isn’t over yet.

ND was the 5th or 6th best team in the SEC…which is nothing to sneeze at.

  8. polegojim says: Jan 7, 2013 11:53 PM

And…. not even as close as the score.

I knew it when BCS crowned ND #1…. still a very broken system.

    Well done Tide!

  9. tubad4ya says: Jan 7, 2013 11:54 PM

ND had no business being on the same field with Bama, and we can thank the wonderful BCS for that. The sooner the playoff system arrives, the better.

  10. pnut87 says: Jan 7, 2013 11:56 PM

Wasn’t this supposed to be a football game? Were there any non-Alabama fans watching this game past the half?

I didn’t have to jump in my 85 Delorean to see this coming. Well thanks to the Irish I’m now a multi millionaire and you can be one too. All you have to do is bet against the Irish and you too can have millions like me and even shower in your winning like me!! Life is good unless your Irish. LMAO

Pro scouts and coaches need to take another look at Manti Te’o before drafting him. He totally blew it out there tonight. Risky draft pick.

  16. crazyfootballfun says: Jan 8, 2013 12:01 AM

Clearly the 2 best teams in the country did not play tonite…thank goodness a playoff system is around the corner. Congrats to alabama for a dominating performance.

  17. amosalanzostagg says: Jan 8, 2013 12:02 AM

It is one thing for ND to say that the have built and SEC type defense with an SEC running game. It is another to watch Alabama execute an SEC defense and offense. ND was clueless all night long.

Urban Meyer was right when he said ND had no clue as to the size and speed of Alabama

    7 for 7

Will the rest of college football be ticked if 2 SEC
teams have 2 of the four slots in next years playoff and then play for a national championship?

    Texas A&M versus Alabama perhaps?

Maybe now we won’t have to hear the talking heads tell us how great T’eo is, how great the Irish defense is…ad naseum.

A blow out. SEC dominance again.

Where is that rude awakening we were in for? Where is that 42-10 ND win Irishtn? How does it feel to get beat by the people you think so lowly of the “cousins”? Where are all the people that have been SOOOOO mean all the way up to this game? Sorry to all the decent ND fans out there that you have to read this. This is not for you. Manti Teo is a class act and so is the whole ND football team. They have a really great coach too but I wouldn’t trade ANYTHING in the world for Coach Saban. Dynasty Baby!! Woo Hooooo, Roll Tide Roll!!!

  32. mycm1127 says: Jan 8, 2013 12:16 AM

So LSU was so terrible at 13-0 before losing but it still took 7 quarters for Bama to score a TD on them. It took to half to score 28 when LSU gave up 21 in a game not passing the 50 in 3 quarters. Yeah ND had an SEC defense! Ha

  36. dcfan4life says: Jan 8, 2013 12:20 AM

So much for a defensive struggle. Notre Dame had a solid resume, but the near loss at home to Pittsburgh showed they had weaknesses. I think with the eye test Texas A & M and Oregon were the best 2 matches for Alabama, but on paper with wins and losses it was ND. Too bad, im tired of watching totally unthrilling national championships…

  39. canehouse says: Jan 8, 2013 12:28 AM

Oh yeah…. That was an absolute toying… What a mess… until USC, FSU, or Miami rise again… no team or conf. will upend Bama or the SEC. WE CAN ONLY HOPE!

  40. amosalanzostagg says: Jan 8, 2013 12:28 AM

    kiopta,

Until ND rids itself of yesteryear’s football scheduling ND will still be irrelevant on a national scale. Navy? Pitt? Purdue? puh-leeze.

The ACC was a good move because it guarantees you a BCS slot, 5 ACC games of your chosing?

Play more than one big boy than you did this year(Stanford), Don’t count OU. They beat WVU 50-49 and A&M undressed them big time on national TV. USC is a shell of their former greatness.

Play a Big boy schedule against quality big time programs. Play Oregon in Eugene. Play Ohio State in Columbus. Hell, Play A&M in College Station.

You’d suffer growing pains big time, but it would benefit ND in the short term and the long term.

No need to thank me. The victory tonight was thanks enough.

    RTR

Ok just read Julio Jones is fine and so are his legs. Now back to CLOUD 9!!!

  46. sincityhawk says: Jan 8, 2013 12:38 AM

As a Georia fan, it pains me to think about that last play against Bama and what could of been. Murray, Gurley and UGA’s offense would’ve put up some points and our defense would’ve had their way against ND as well. Damn that last play.

But this is Bama’s night and crystal ball. Great performance and congratulations. One cannot deny the dynasty talk.

One last thing. Te’o can’t hold Jarvis Jones or Alec Ogletree’s jock. ESPN had to find one player on ND to spotlight and they chose Te’o off his interception in the BC game and they threw him down our throats. Te’o is a good story and all, but JJ and AO will be studs at the next level.

  47. thefiesty1 says: Jan 8, 2013 12:40 AM

  48. steeelfann says: Jan 8, 2013 12:48 AM

  49. txnative61 says: Jan 8, 2013 12:49 AM

I like both the Aggies and the Ducks. The Aggies lost 2 early to Florida and LSU, who both lost their bowl games. No question they got an assist from LSU the week before to narrowly beat Alabama. The Ducks—one loss was to Stanford, who drew out a very nice blueprint for how, with the right personnel, Oregon could be beaten. Great teams both, but Saban can read a blueprint, and rested, ready, and focused, the Tide would have rolled, maybe not like Notre Dame, but over A&M and Oregon too.

The look on the ND players faces as the game went on said it all. They had no idea what they were getting into.

The size, speed and athleticism of Alabama was so evident on both sides of the ball.

If ND played in the SEC they would be a 3-4 loss team, it’s not even up for debate after tonight.

They have a lot of work to do.

To the jerk wads at ND…why not join a conference? Your team would be much better prepared instead of playing that cream puff schedule that your team played this year. Quit trying to hoard the TV money for yourselves…greed is a mortal sin and even Touchdown Jesus knows that.

Just as much as those that continually bash Southerners with lame taunts regarding inbreeding, mobile home living, etc. have no evidence to back their claims as well. IMO it’s better to be gracious in victory. It is gratifying to the smarter supporters of your vanquished opponent (who will respect you more) and it confuses the hell out of the idiots.

Congrats to ND for not giving up and playing for 60 minutes; they stayed classy. Ditto for Coach Kelly and his post-game comments. This where teams learn to shrug it off and come back ready to rumble next September. It ain’t over for ND.

Now for the haters, I guess we’ve answered all those sillyass questions and snarky comments regarding weak schedules and over-rated conferences and such. I guess our best answer is to simply give you what you want: even more reason to hate- and fear- Saban, The Tide and the SEC. Hate on, children. RFTR.

  67. cometkazie says: Jan 8, 2013 8:13 AM

Deb: I was really pleased to see the attention given Barrett post-game. He was all smiles and communicates well. His answer to the question about playing three positions was fabulous.

I thing the Aggies benefited from ‘Bama playing LSU the week before. They would have been on the losing end had they played with Saban preparing his team for better than a month.

Business as usual for the Tide.

  68. metitometin says: Jan 8, 2013 8:33 AM

Completely fraudulent and bogus game. Oregon and Texas A&M are my #1 and #2 teams. A&M killed Bama and Oregon’s loss to Stanford (a top 10 team) in OT was far less ugly than Alabama’s loss to A&M. The pollster’s and BCS love affair with Alabama and the SEC is sickening. Alabama will be in the preseason top 5 every year because of their name and their conference. They can lose a game and it really doesn’t matter. Beating Notre Dame proves nothing because Notre Dame beat virtually no one of consequence this year and they would have lost to Pitt at home if Pitt had not botched a 30 yard chip shot. Alabama is a bogus, fraudulent team. Give me Oregon, give me A&M any day of the week.

They got the victory and deserved it.But reality says that being spotted 24 points early and escaping from a Tide first and goal for the winning score is hardly killing someone. Winner flies and loser cries,so congrats to A&M,but they were very fortunate to escape with the win. ………If you want to go and see the NC Trophy, you can use last years map to find it.It hasn’t moved….. As an Aggie fan I have to second what louhudson23 said. A&M didn’t KILL Bama… not even close.

A&M was killing Bama in the middle of the 2nd quarter, but that Bama running game just kept churning them back into it. The Aggies never trailed but I had no doubt that Bama would run the ball from the 3 and win the game…. no doubt!

They didn’t… and they lost. But that game came down to the last play.

Couldn’t agree more…. Te’o was a top 5 pick before this, scouts got to see him against a NFL caliber line and not only was he a non factor, he was the weak link. Bama repeatedly went after him and over him. He gave up 2 red zone TDs as well.

    Te’o will stay a 1st round pick but 15-25 range now IMO…

To everyone that calls us “SEC bandwagon folks” or tells us to stop cheering for our conference and “pick a team”. We DO have our own individual teams, mine is UF. We haven’t always been so dedicated to the conference. We would like to thank you for that. Everyone else talks so much trash about how overrated we are, or how much praise the media gives us, or how we don’t play anybody outside our conference. After so much trash talk over the past 6, no wait, 7 years its made us band together. You pick a fight with one of us you pick a fight with all of us. And eventually, when the SEC loses the Nat Champ, you all are going to talk so much trash to any SEC fan. Doesn’t matter if we’re a Bama fan or from Kentucky.

I had no problem with ND playing in the championship game they were the only undefeated FBS team elgible. However, ND was under the impression that if they were able to stop the run and prevent thier safeties from commiting to the run they would have a chance to win that game. The problem came with the play action. ND had no answer. Did they deserve to be in that game? Yes, would they have done better against UGA? Maybe, but Saban said it best at the end; 5 more yards and it would’ve been UGA in that Game. I for one was cheering for alabama for the simple fact that all the ND fans I ran into gave zero respect to the SEC teams. I’ve been hearing about how overrated the SEC was despite having a 6-3 Bowl record this year. Yeah LSU and Florida lost, as well as Miss State, however the SEC had 9 teams playing bowl games. The only other conference to match that was the Big 12 and they went 4-5.

    @orthomarine …

    Thank you!

    @foreverlsu …

You know I still love you, right?

    @cometkazie …

Yes, I agree. That LSU game really took it out of our guys. They left it all in Death Valley. That was a tough run: undefeated Miss St., LSU, then A&M. No outside opponent will ever be as tough as our conference opponents–and the LSU game has become about as intense as the Auburn game.

    @normtide …

So grateful to our SEC family for all the support!! Like you said, looking for #8!

What will be the response next year should Bama “threepeat”?

You know usually when one team “killed” another team their QB isn’t knelled down on one knee unable to look as the other team is 2 yards away from the end zone with only about a minute left in the game with the chance to take the lead and win. An example of when one team “killed” another team would be Alabama’s win over ND on Monday night…

Notre Dame is NOT EVEN CLOSE to returning to prominence.

People are talking about our games against UGA, LSU and aTm. Playing these guys, week in and week out, is another reason we band together. If you happen to make it through the gauntlet that is the SEC, and are in position to play for the BCS CG, we ALL know what went into getting there. That is one heckuva task! You other conference’s don’t cheer for your rival, because you have no respect for them. We, on the other hand, do! Even when they have down years, Kentucky, MSU, Ole Miss, Mizzou, and Vandy, all have the talent and ability to ruin someone’s season! THAT is why we all support each other. That, and the fact that the HATER’S forced the issue.

    Roll SEC, Roll

Get used to ND. They will be shoved down or throats for as long as they are allowed to set their own schedule and until they are forced to join a conference. Remember they didn’t join the ACC, only agreed to play 5 ACC teams every year. I’ll bet Duke is on that list every year.

AMEN bamafan36, but there is no use trying to explain it, many have tried, none have succeeded. It’s called Southern Pride, it’s a ‘southern thing’. Kind of like when people from New Jersey say it’s a “Jersey thing”, you know? I don’t get that whole scene but I understand that I am not suppose to because it’s not for me to get. The difference is I am not going to make fun of it just because it’s not the cultural background that I am accustom to and I’m sure as hell not going to call them all kinds of hurtful things if one of their sports teams happens to be better than mine. When I say the Pledge of Allegiance or hear the Star Spangled Banner I feel pride in my whole country, not just the south, and despite our many cultural differences, we are all still one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. Okay, maybe not justice for “all” per say but that’s for another topic, on another thread, on a different website all together. I still can’t believe that us southerners are still having to defend ourselves so vehemently against bigotry. I guess that’s why this win over ND has felt so much sweeter than the previous championships we have won. It’s just a game but it has come to represent so much more.

I swear I come on this website telling myself I am just going to read the one article that caught my eye in my mailbox and that I am going to avoid the comment section all together. Then two hours and four thousand sentences later I’m like, “damn, I did it again!”
