Oklahoma State parts ways with DC after four years

Following up on a report from earlier this week via coachingsearch.com, Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Bill Young has in fact parted ways with Mike Gundy and the Cowboys.

The now-former DC (pictured left next to Gundy) confirmed the news to Jimmie Tramel of the Tulsa World. According to Young, he and Gundy met last February following the 2011 season, where a philosophical difference over Young’s future with the program resulted in the two sides agreeing that 2012 would be Young’s last year with the Pokes.

“We had a good discussion,” Young told the paper. “I told him if he wouldn’t mind, please don’t put this (information) out there until I have time to finish the season and look for a new job.

“He agreed to that. He was very accommodating and was trying to help. It’s easier to get a job in this business if you have got one.”

Where Young ends up next isn’t clear. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State has announced that linebackers coach and co-defensive Glenn Spencer would be promoted to DC.

This year, Oklahoma State ranked 82nd in yards allowed, 64th in points allowed and were among the worst in the country in pass defense. But if there was one area that had been helping the Pokes’ defense, it was the turnover margin. The Cowboys forced an NCAA-best 78 turnovers in 2010 and ’11, leading the country in the latter year with 44. This year, Oklahoma State forced just 22 turnovers all season.
