Texas Tech looks to A&M for new defensive coordinator

Matt Wallerstedt

A month after its defensive coordinator bolted to Cincinnati along with Tommy Tuberville, Texas Tech has found a new one — and didn’t even have to leave the state of Texas to do so.

First reported by Chris Level of RedRaiderSports.com and subsequently confirmed by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, new head coach Kliff Kingsbury has hired Matt Wallerstedt as his defensive coordinator.  Kingsbury and Wallerstedt were on the same staff at Texas A&M this past season.

Wallerstedt will replace Art Kaufman, who spent just one season at the school.

Wallerstedt spent one season at A&M, coming to the Aggies after two seasons as Air Force’s coordinator.  He was also a coordinator at Wyoming (1997-2002) and North Alabama (2003)

Other coaching stops for the 17-year coaching veteran included Kansas State and Arizona State.
