Getty ImagesRumored upheaval on Virginia Tech’s offensive coaching staff could, in the end, cost the Hokies its starting quarterback.
Long thought to be a no-brainer to return for his senior season, Logan Thomas, the speculation goes, is having second thoughts about another year in Blacksburg. Long-time offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring is reportedly on his way out — it’s expected he will remain on the staff — in favor of former Auburn offensive coordinator Scott Loeffler.
Loeffler has reportedly interviewed twice for what’s not yet an official vacancy, including an in-town sit-down Monday. Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com tweeted last night that Loeffler has indeed been hired as the Hokies’ coordinator, although there’s been nothing official yet from the school.
Speaking of official, Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times reports that a press release is set to be issued at 4 p.m. ET this afternoon announcing Thomas’ future football intentions. Thomas is coming off a season in which he was fourth in the nation in interceptions (16) but would be entering what’s perceived to be a shallow quarterback pool compared to 2014.
The deadline for filing early-entry paperwork with the NFL is today, although, if the player has not signed with an agent, he has until Jan. 18 to withdraw his name from the April draft.
I remember a lot of Hokie fans talking about him being the best qb in the ACC. That just never quite worked out for them though.
“Hi, Logan. We are the Canadian football league. You may not have heard of us but…”
GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!! As an Auburn fan I watched Loeffler look very inept and ignorant as an offensive coordinator. He can’t adapt to his players and continues to try to run the same stuff when it’s obvious it’s not going to work. Good luck VTech…
Hope he’s coming back. He’s far from NFL ready.
Hey Logan:
After your memorable performance in the Russell Athletic Bowl against Rutgers’, you better stay put! Honestly you are one of the worst QB’s I’ve ever seen. The only one worse than you and many others is Gary Nova from Rutgers’. OMG is he terrible.
How does Loeffler keep getting jobs? He was awful at Florida. He was supposed to refine Tebow and bring in a pro style passing game. Meanwhile Tebow regressed dramatically while he was there. He was historically awful at Auburn last year. His results otherwise have been kind of meh. I guess his claim to fame is being Chad Henne’s qb coach at Michigan. Seems like an awfully thin resume to keep getting good jobs.
Thomas turned a pretty good 2011 into a not so great 2012. At the beginning of the 2012 season he was thrown in the Heisman talk, but that quickly faded. He is not ready for the NFL. With that being said, unless he has a huge 2013, he’ll be drafted higher this year than he would be next year.
He has size and potential, but a majority of his throws this year were not good. As a Hokie fan, I hope he stays.
