It’s difficult to pin UConn’s second consecutive 5-7 season on much else besides a lack of offensive productivity.
The Huskies had one of the best defenses in the Big East conference and allowed just under 20 points per game. The offense, meanwhile, was one of the worst in all of major college football.
Had the Huskies been able to find any sort of consistency on that side of the ball -- besides being consistently bad, that is -- they might have gone to a bowl game. Three of UConn’s seven losses came within a touchdown. In two of those losses, the Huskies weren’t able to manage more than seven points.
Not surprisingly then, a change has been made. Offensive coordinator George DeLeone will now only coach the offensive line. He will also have additional duties of Associate (to the) Head Coach.
“I continue to be excited about the direction of our offense and I look forward to continue work with the offensive line, a position group that I have been passionate about my entire coaching career,” Deleone said in a statement. “The new role of Associate Head Coach is a new part of my job that I am eager to take on.”
Desmond Connor of the Hartford Courant adds that former Cincinnati wide receivers coach T.J. Weist is a favorite to replace DeLeone as the Huskies’ OC, but that has not been confirmed by the school.
