Manziel ‘just as shocked as everybody’ over Te’o situation

For better or worse, Johnny Manziel and Manti Te’o will forever be intertwined in stiff-armed lore.

Thanks to an utterly brilliant first season as Texas A&M’s starting quarterback in the Aggies’ virgin trek through the SEC, Manziel became the only freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in the 78-year history of the award.  Thanks to an outstanding senior season on the field and the emotional difficulties he triumphed over off of it, Te’o became just the second defense-only player ever to finish runner-up.

While Manziel has since dipped a toe or two into Internet infamy, Te’o — either unwittingly or willfully — cannonballed into the deep end of it of late.

You know the ever-evolving Te’o imbroglio and so does Manziel, who spent some time with the Notre Dame linebacker on the postseason awards circuit and formed a bond on some level with his fellow Heisman finalist.  As events began to unfold in the wake of Deadspin‘s stunning revelation regarding a dead girlfriend that didn’t even exist, Manziel’s Twitter timeline Wednesday went from distrusting media observer to someone hoping it’s not true to #MindBlown.

A day later, consider Manziel’s mind still blown.

It was a shock for the entire sports world,” the redshirt freshman told Brent Zwerneman of the San Antonio Express-News. “And being a sports fan, I was just as shocked as everybody else. … Nobody could believe that.”

The morass Te’o currently finds himself enveloped in may or may not have begun with an online relationship that devolved into the mother of all hoaxes.  Manziel’s supposed missteps can also be traced to the web thanks in large part to photos that went viral.  In that vein, it appears Manziel’s been there, learned that.

“The Internet is a tricky, dangerous place for sure. You see that time and again,” Manziel said, adding, “You might have to hit save on a draft every now and then on a tweet.”

And, with that, A&M’s athletic director can sleep a bit easier tonight.  Provided Manziel can stay out of jail, of course.

    Glad we cleared that up.

I’ll certainly sleep better knowing that Johnny Football is wary of the big bad Internet. Much more dangerous than having a fake ID and going out to Texas nightclubs. Brrrr!

Sounds as though Manziel has learned a couple of things during his brief time on the national stage. And from previous articles it seems A&M is making a better effort preparing him for the pitfalls of fame. Right now it looks as though Notre Dame’s only interest is helping Te’o weave a more complicated web.

This is a pretty ridiculous headline. Of course he’s shocked, unless faking dead girlfriends is what all the cool kids are doing now.

Good Old Johnny Manziel is not the righteous person he has been protrayed to be. Some votors felt he should not have been on the ballot because he has 3 misdemeanor charges hanging over his head that have not been resolved. These are from June 2012, long before the season started. These have been quietly hushed over the long season. The charges are not flattering and can easily be overlooked as youthful exhuberance. Having an illegal Louisiana Drivers license may be a youthful indescretion but it also can lead to much trouble down the road if not caught at that time.

Perhaps not. Here are Johnny Maanziel’s charges and his mug shot:

Some writers said he did not deserve to be on the ballot due to these unresolved charges. That made two losers on the ballot with the best MAN among the three and fully worthy of the heisman, Collin Klein out in the cold.

Everyone likes a good joke and a good hoax as long as they are duped into a big, big lie. Lannay Kekua & Manti Te’o is a great sad misleading hoax to get him sympathy votes for the Heisman but the best altime sports hoax involved Sidd Finch, written by George Plimpton in April 1, 1985 edition of Sports Illustrated. What a great story about a non-existant athlete. It was an April fools joke and a lot of people bought it. Here is that article:

Manti Te’o needs to step up as a good God fearing mormon man would do and accept responsibility in this mess as a man of God.

thanks for that little jab against manziel at the end of the article. It must be soooo hard to point out any of the positive things he’s done since NBC sports isnt biased or anything towards notre dame.

Can I be interviewed re: my reaction to Te’o

  8. irishking says: Jan 18, 2013 4:21 AM

I think this story was rather dead from the beginning.

None of this makes any sense to my wife. She tells me that now I know why she doesn’t follow football.

Overrated goober from the word go.

    wait te’o’s girlfriend was fake!?!?!?

  12. harbourimages says: Jan 18, 2013 8:24 AM

    LOL scalpemseminoles! Good one!!!

Next up…Collin Klein gets his turn to express his disbelief.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if somebody took one of these ridiculous questions and totally went the other way with “I wasn’t shocked at all. Even though I barely knew Manti and hadn’t been following his personal life, I still instinctively knew that his girlfriend was a fabrication. And I’ve never trusted the Tuiasosopo clan since my grandfather warned me about them when I was a little kid…”

These Heisman voters should get off their high horse when it comes to voting. They rarely get the winner right anyways. That said, shame on A&M and the College Station District Attorney’s office for hushing up Manziel’s crimes all because he’s a big football hero.

  15. brewcrewfan54 says: Jan 18, 2013 11:30 AM

Manziel’s issues weren’t a hushed up secret at all. The reason nobody knew about them earlier is because nobody outside of Texas really knew who he was before the end of September. Once he started to join the Heisman race his issues were pretty well documented.

  16. Deb says: Jan 18, 2013 2:03 PM

    @namriverrat69 and granadafan …

I don’t get where you guys are coming from with that nonsense about A&M hushing up Manziel’s misdemeanors. We’ve been reading about them right here on CFT, and they’ve certainly been covered in other media outlets.

Frankly, I don’t think driving without a license or the other things kids get into every day in any way compares to lying about a dying girlfriend, selling commemorative leis at games to raise money on her behalf, continuing to promote this insane story after you’ve told your coach and school you were supposedly duped. This whole thing is way out there on the sick and crazy scale.

  17. Deb says: Jan 18, 2013 2:04 PM

    @jessejames182 …

That little jab at Johnny Football didn’t come from CFT writer John Taylor–it came from Coach Mike Stoops. You would have known that if a) you were a regular CFT reader, or b) you’d bothered to click on the link John provided with that comment. Come on … weren’t you even a little curious as to why that comment included a hyperlink?

This was on ESPN’s website in June…. if the college station DA was trying to “hush this up”…. they did a really bad job….,d.dmQ
