APMichigan State’s Pat Narduzzi publicly denied earlier this month that he had any interest in making a lateral move to become USC’s defensive coordinator.
Reportedly, a coordinator from the Trojans’ own conference holds the same level of interest as well.
According to Adam Jude of The Oregonian, and citing a source close to the coach, Nick Aliotti has turned down the opportunity to replace Monte Kiffin as USC’s defensive coordinator. The paper notes that it was USC reaching out to Aliotti, not vice-versa.
The report comes the same day as former Ducks head coach Chip Kelly was officially introduced as the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Aliotti has spent 21 years with the Ducks, and keeping the long-time coordinator on the staff is considered crucial for the new head coach to maintain continuity in a football program that has been in and around the BCS title mix each of the past four seasons. Despite the seeming lag in a hire, it’s still expected that offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich will be named as Kelly’s successor sooner rather than later.
As far as USC’s search for the elder Kiffin’s replacement, the speculation persists that Clancy Pendergast is at or near the top of Lane Kiffin‘s defensive to-do list. Pendergast, a USC defensive assistant in 1992, served as Cal’s coordinator the past three years, but he had spent the previous 15 seasons in the NFL.
