USC annouces Clancy Pendergast as new DC

As expected, USC coach Lane Kiffin stayed in the Pac-12 to replace his dad, Monte Kiffin, at the defensive coordinator spot.

In a release on Friday, Kiffin announced that former Cal DC Clancy Pendergast has a brilliant name will join the Trojans program in the same capacity.

“Clancy is a perfect fit for us,” said Kiffin in a statement. “He is a very experienced and successful defensive coordinator. He plays an attacking-style defense with multiple looks and, having spent the last three years in the Pac-12, he knows how to defend the various kinds of offenses that we see in this conference.

“What was particularly appealing to me was how he took a Cal defense that was seventh in the Pac-12 in total defense the year before he arrived and then led the league his first two years. That’s our goal here, to have that same kind of impact. I also liked that he has coached at the highest level, getting to the Super Bowl in the NFL.”

In 2010 and ’11, Cal led the Pac-12 in total defense and pass defense. However, the Golden Bears ranked 93rd and 106th in the nation in those categories this past season.

Pendergast previously served as a DC at the NFL level with the Arizona Cardinals Kansas City Chiefs.

USC finished 7-6 this year and gave up an average of 33 points per game during the final six games of the year, including a Sun Bowl loss to Georgia Tech.

The wrong coach is being replaced. It should be Kiffin they are replacing.

You’ll have one more season for others to agree with you. Kiffin has got to be on one hot seat! This is good though as Haden has all off season to look at who would be a good replacement when he pulls the plug.

They picked Monte up out of the retirement home, now they got this Pendergast home boy from the unemployment line.

You think a program of USC’s stature could command more than that.

This program is dead until the coach and AD are gone.

Trojans fans know the main two weaknesses last season were the offensive line’s inexperience and defense. However, the personnel on the defense was pretty solid, so it was clear the scheme was the problem.

Pendergast doesn’t have to be any mastermind to turn this thing around, just put his guys in the right spots and utilize the fantastic players USC brings in.

As a usc fan I am happy and I think it’s a great hire. Now we just need to find the right line backer coach and an oc would be nice too.

I agree with the last post for the most part. True, the O-line was young but they did an adaquate job to win. For the most part the O scored enough to win most games. It was the defesne that let them down. I think on offense, it was the play calling and the lack of utilizing the players at hand. They have so much talent, yet we continue to see the same two WRs get the ball forced to them. On defense, I thought the athletes where there. The lack of depth, and I hear the lack of practicing tackling where the two biggest weakness. I was not happy with the play of the linebackers as a group. They are undersized, and didnt make plays. 5 Star Dawson in the middle was a non factor. U can’t be that weak at LB in both the run and pass and expect ur DB’s to lock on for 5 seconds. That don’t work. I like the hire, he’ll bring us a new look and an excitement. And let’s not forget everyone, a coach never misses a tackle, or drops a ball. The coaches just coach. It’s the players that ulitimaly make plays. SC’s got players, now it’s their turn to make the plays.
