Ex-UGA RB Ken Malcome to drop down to FCS level

A handful of days after officially leaving Georgia, Ken Malcome has all but officially landed at a new school to continue his collegiate playing career.

The running back confirmed to both the Athens Banner-Herald‘s Marc Weiszer and ESPN.com‘s Joe Schad that he has decided to transfer to Southern Illinois. As the Salukis are an FCS program, Malcome will be eligible to compete immediately. He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2013.

“It’s a ways away, but I felt comfortable with the coaches and players,” Malcome told the Banner-Herald. “It’s not too far off. It’s just right. I’m going to make what I got and make the best of it. I like it.”

The paper writes that Malcome is awaiting final NCAA approval before the move becomes official.

Malcome, a four-star member of UGA’s 2010 recruiting class, started the first game of the 2012 season, but quickly tumbled down the depth chart behind the freshman duo of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. He finished his Bulldogs career with 446 yards and two touchdowns.
