Ex-Auburn assistant one of two added to TCU’s staff

Curtis Luper

Not retained after the Great Gene Chizik Purge at Auburn last November, Curtis Luper has, finally, landed on his coaching feet.

Luper was one of two additions to Gary Patterson‘s coaching staff announced by TCU Wednesday, with the other being DeMontie Cross.  Luper will replace Trey Haverty as wide receivers coach, while Cross will take over the linebacking unit previously manned by Randy Shannon.

Shannon left the Horned Frogs late last month for a job on Bret Bielema‘s Arkansas staff while Haverty moved to Texas Tech.

Lauded as one of the top recruiters in the country while at Auburn, Luper spent the past four seasons as the Tigers’ running backs coach and recruiting coordinator.  Luper also has experience in the Big 12, serving as Oklahoma State’s running backs coach from 2005-08.

Cross spent the past two seasons at Kansas (2012) and Wisconsin (2011) after being an assistant with the Buffalo Bills from 2006-10.

    Why in the world would you say such a thing? Has he done something to you to arouse such suspicion?

    I think not. He appeared to be a good man who now gets to be near his son, coach him and watch him play.

    So, other than just meanness, what’s with the comment?

    @gatiger

    It all stems back to Cam Newton and the National Championship. I’m slowly starting to accept that Auburn is a legitimate school playing within the guidelines of other SEC members. Many people questioned Cam Newton as a true “student/athlete”. While he brought Auburn a “NC”, the Universitys’ prestige took a huge hit. Many think it a renegade program. The NCAA investigators are all over Auburn even today! It embarrassed the NCAA (ok, that’s easy to do) and questioned the validity of that NC. Shug Jordan, Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackon…so many wonderful folks representing Auburn University….and then Gene Chizik and Cam Newton! And please don’t bring up that Auburn beat South Carolina twice that season because THAT is not the reason my disdain. Moving forward I will root for Auburn when playing non-conference foes and in bowl games. But I know those who were responsible for bringing Newton to Auburn and it was reprehensible in my opinion.

    @ gamecocker

    Luper is going to do just fine at TCU and you disliking him should be normal after the beating Cam laid on South Carolina in the SEC championship back when.Get over it and stop whining about Cam beating y`all twice that season.By the way many say C am wouldnt go back to Auburn well he`s enrolled again there to finish his degree something not many would do.Win a NC at South Carolina or even a SEC Championship there in which Cam laid the azz whippin on y`all.Try to get over it and since i have a house also in South Carolina i`ll try rootin for y`all.lol.

    @kozbee

    If that is true about Cam re-enrolling at Auburn I truly would like to know about it. Is there an article or anything you can direct me to that will prove that? If that is true, that would be very good news and I am not being facetious. I would respect him doing that. Please advise. The Gamecocker

    Glad to know you have seen the light and have a home in SC.

    Luper will be a good coach and recruiter at TCU and hope him the best.

    Kozbee:

    I apologize to you. Please ignore my latest comment as I wrote that BEFORE seeing this. I am happy Cam is back at Auburn earning his degree.

    Please accept my apology as it was written in error.

    No need to apologize gamecocker.When we look at 50% of players in college have done wrong one way or another at some point in time but just never got caught.Most smoke pot,drink,break rules just some get caught.I agree Cam was not the best student in college back in Florida till the time he was drafted but yes i give him alot of credit going back for his degree.I guess i get hasty at times myself but you will find i stand for all SEC teams when others rag on them.My honest opinion i do hope y`all can win a NC before the Ole ball coach retires.Goodluck this year and i`ll be rooting for the Gamecocks also.
