I say good for him. Glad he’s been able to have that burden lifted. As others have said, I hope this alters his outlook on life. I personally know a college kid who was very heavily into guns, drugs, etc. He got the scare of his life when a guy he was riding around in a car with got pulled over for suspicion of murder. Scared the you-know-what out of the kid I know. Changed his life virtually on the spot. He became a Christian shortly after that and does a lot of sharing his testimony with younger kids. Doesn’t hurt that he’s 6′ 4″, can put both elbows on the rim, and is a small college All-American You should see how he absolutely captivates kids’ attention when he speaks to them now sharing his story about where he was v. where he is now. Amazing. Sometimes that’s what it takes… an event that just slaps you into reality.

Thanks for the information. I stuck to physics so didn’t get into chemistry anymore than I had to do. I guess this old fart is just not up on drugs these days, as I never used any and never really had much interest in the whole culture.
I hope this did not damage this young mans chances or future in any way. It appears that both of the facilities need to be examined to find out possibly what methods they use, or how the test is conducted to say the least. Of course, it really could come down to the period between test, but that is up to the law to decide what is and isn’t an acceptable time frame.
I wish the young man luck in the future and hopefully, he will continue on with his success.

Woebegone, supplementing what PP said, the biological half-life of a material varies from person to person, so we can’t apply generalities to a specific person.

It is my understanding that the marijuana test is so sensitive that it will show up in urine even if the person is just around someone smoking it. Usually, they look at the concentration in the urine and make a conclusion based on that.

Labs should be using standardized testing or else their results won’t stand up in court. If the two labs tested splits of the same sample, something is wrong with their tests.

I was an analytical chemist in an earlier life.

woebegong, as far as marijuana is concerned, the frequency that a person smokes is what determines how long it takes to exit your system. If you’re a habitual toker, weed will be in your system for possibly up to 6-7 weeks. If you don’t smoke and get high one night, even if you get completely blazed that night, it will be out of your system in about a week. Now the other thing is that the signs cops are looking for to determine if someone is under the influence of marijuana is tired, drooping, glassy, red eyes. Those same symptoms are also the symptoms for fatigue. So it is quite possible that he was just really tired, probably from the combination of school, homework, parties, girls, and football.

One is left to wonder, just how reliable some of these testing labs are when both come up with different test results. Of course the article doesn’t say, how much time took places between the first and second test. I though it took about 30 days for the system to come test clean, so based on the article, you can’t surmise a whole lot on the timing.
Glad the young man is getting a second chance though, so if he actually was in violation, I hope he has learned his lesson, and if not, I bet he will not go down that road in the future. He doesn’t want to short change himself and his chances for a new uniform in the Sunday league.
