I’ve read interviews with players who’ve talked about the great positive influence both Saban and, of course, Bear Bryant had on their lives. One of my favorite Bear stories was when he threatened to bench Kenny Stabler for his after-hours hijinks. Stabler didn’t believe him until he got a telegram from Namath that said, “He means it.” Tough love is about all they can do, but with some players, it’s enough to make a lasting impression.

The SEC is clean. It is the Big Ten and Pac-12 that do all the cheating, and then use their northern and west coast sense of privilege and elitism to claim they are only doing it because they are oh so sure the SEC is doing it worse. Well, the SEC knows they are under the spotlight of stereotype and stays clean, and it is the Big Ten and Pac-12 that cheat and get caught and lose national championships because their focus is more on cheating schemes than good ole fashion running fast 40′s and lifting big weights like they do in the SEC.

Hey Deb,
No offense taken. My name is kind of a joke. I like to think of Jack Lambert wearing a tuxedo t-shirt, because it says he’s classy but he’s ready to party as well. I’m not saying anything bad about the SEC in particular although I do admit I am no fan. What I am really saying is that it is up to the parents to teach these kids their moral character not the coaches, although I do believe in rare cases the coaches can make a difference. I think the last one that comes to mind immediately is Bo Schembeckler, which probably says something.
I’ll be the last to disagree with you that I am not too bright though, truer words have never been spoken. Thanks for the feedback and I respect your opinion as always.

Just reread that post, and sorry–I probably hit a little too hard there. But really … when is the last time a Big 10 or Pac 12 or ACC coach was applauded for shaping the moral character of his players? These coaches don’t take players to raise. They take them to coach in an effort to win football games. Some of these anti-SEC posts really are getting absurd.

You’re not too bright, are you? The username makes that clear. Jack Lambert was one of the most straight-up, hard-nosed football players to ever walk on a field. He’s the last person to need someone to attach “classy” to his name.

These are high school kids–in many cases kids who’ve never had even the smallest advantage in life–being courted like superstars. It doesn’t take illegal offers of money on the table for recruiters to make these kids feel like they’re the hottest thing since RGIII. Plus they’ve got coaches, parents, girlfriends, buddies, and everyone else pitching to them night and day. No wonder they can’t make up their minds.

I love how guys on a football blog think that at 17 or 18 they would have had the wisdom and moral fiber of someone 42. Yeah, big guy, I’m sure you’d have made the best possible decision and stuck with it no matter what.

And be4bama is right. McClain came from a difficult background, but Saban is a tough disciplinarian. McClain stayed out of trouble while he was at Bama and has had nothing else since going to Oakland. No matter what prejudices you have about the SEC, it’s like any other conference: Some coaches are tough taskmasters and some aren’t.

The only argument I make against that is that there is a difference between giving someone strong moral character and temporarily keeping someone in line. One of those is shaping a young man and his future, the other is only a temporary fix. I think it could be argued that what Saban does is the latter rather than the former.

Head case probably. Anyone that decommits without a very good reason, like a coaching change, shows he has no moral character. Unfortunately this is a lesson he probably won’t learn playing anywhere if he is a star in college football, let alone in the SEC.
