APUpon being relieved of his duties as Cal’s head football coach in November, Jeff Tedford‘s buyout stated that the coach would receive $6.9 million over three years minus a collegiate/NFL coaching salary.
That number’s going to be a little bit lower. Cal reached a settlement with Tedford on Monday that will pay him up to $5.5 million over those three years, which breaks down to $1.8 million in 2013 and 2014, and $1.95 million in 2015. Tedford was originally guaranteed $2.3 million annually for the remaining life of his deal with the university.
Though the amount of the settlement is $1.4 million lower, it will allow Tedford to keep a larger share of any salary he earns over the next three years as either a head coach or assistant at the college or pro level. Additionally, Tedford and the university agreed to evenly split any amounts in a future salary above $1.5 million.
Tedford went 82-57 in 11 seasons as the Bears’ head coach. He was succeeded by Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes.
