New Mexico State hires ex-Wyoming OC to same position

Just a week into the job, New Mexico State coach Doug Martin has hired an offensive coordinator. Leading the Aggies’ offense going forward will be Gregg Brandon, who was the OC/quarterbacks coach at Wyoming for the past two seasons.

“This is one of the top recruits we got this year,” Martin said in a statement on Friday. “Gregg (Brandon) brings a wealth of experience that is hard to find at this level, while being one of only two people I trust to hand over the play calling for this offense. Obviously having head coaching experience at the Division I level at Bowling Green University gives him a lot of experiences that will be very valuable to this program. I think the biggest thing that Aggie fans need to know is that Gregg Brandon wanted to be here at New Mexico State.”

Brandon also has ties to Virginia (OC, 2009), Colorado, and was Bowling Green’s head coach from 2003-08.

“When Doug (Martin) was up for the job we spoke by phone and we were both excited for him to have the opportunity to be the next head coach at New Mexico State,” Brandon said. “I’ve known Doug for over 10 years now from my days at Bowling Green and his days at Kent State. Knowing Doug and the kind of person he is, was the No. 1 thing for me when considering New Mexico State. I had no reservations in coming down and working with Doug, his staff and this football team to try and put a competitive team on the field every week.”

Under Brandon, the Cowboys finished the 2012 season 38th in passing offense, 70th in total offense and averaged just under 27 points a game. Wyoming went 4-8 in 2012 and 8-5 in 2011.

A great hire to say the least. Not sure why he would want to take on this task though. Way back in the day, coach B was an assistant coach where I played. I got to know him well then. He is a hard worker and knows the game well. Good luck coach B good to see your face again.
