Penn State lineman granted sixth year of eligibility

For the first time in a while, the NCAA did something for Penn State.

In a release Monday morning, Penn State announced that lineman Garry Gilliam has been granted a sixth year of eligibility after the NCAA approved his request via waiver.

“I’m very excited to be able to continue to help Penn State and to be a part of such an important period in our history,” stated Gilliam.

He will have two more years of eligibility remaining.

Gilliam has played tight end for the Nittany Lions since arriving in 2009. In 2010, Gilliam sustained an ACL injury that knocked him out for the rest of the season and all of 2011. In 2012, he returned to catch seven passes for 65 yards. But because of offensive line depth, coach Bill O’Brien has moved Gilliam, listed as 6-foot-6 and 262 pounds, to offensive line.
