Arizona promotes from within for new safeties coach

Rich Rodriguez AP

When it came time to plug an opening in his defensive staff, Rich Rodriguez didn’t have to look outside of the Wildcats football program let alone the state of Arizona.

UA announced Friday that Matt Caponi has been promoted to the position of safeties coach.  Caponi had spent last year, his first season at the school,  as a defensive graduate assistant.

Caponi will replace Tony Gibson, who left for a job at West Virginia early last month.

Prior to his time at UA, Caponi was a defensive grad assistant at Pitt and the defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania for four years.
