We knew each other, or at least he was courteous enough to pretend that he remembered me, and we would have a nice conversation the last several years I officiated T&F.

LSU hired him to fire Cholly Mac, the best coach LSU ever had. The devotion of his kids is palpable.

The best Mac story I heard involved the slogan “Help Mac pack” at the end of his tenure. Someone showed up at Mac’s house to say good bye. Mac had been packing things up in the August heat, looked up at him, and asked, “Where is everyone?”

You are right about Jolly Cholly Mac! He was a great man and a great coach. He was true purple and gold.

One of the best things that Dietzel did was to appoint his assistant, Cholly Mac, to take his place when he turned tail and eventually wound up in Columbia for many years before he returned to Baton Rouge, where he is retired now, painting watercolors.

Paul Dietzel makes an appearance at LSU games every once in a while, especially at Ole Miss v. LSU games (ha!) and at some homecoming games. Same is true with Dr. Cannon. He is always available to LSU to do whatever they want him to do. LSU fans really love Billy.

Jolly Cholly McClendon was one of the best coaches LSU has ever had! The Tiger’s rich history probably starts with Charlie Mc! I think he took over for that lunatic, Pope Paul Dietzel. Dietzel ruined everything Coach Frank McGuire did but convincing the dik-wads at Carolina to leave the ACC. For 20 years South Carolina floundered until we reached the financial promise land called the SEC!!! Dietzel was FIRED from South Carolina 2 years later!! The scoundrel!!!

Bless that man’s heart, long before Nick Saban ever thought about LSU Charley Mc was givin Bear Bryant and the rest of the Country fits when they played LSU. By far he has and will always have more on the game than what Saban will ever have. His personality was easier to get along with, he wasn’t as rude as Saban, and like Les Miles his players loved him and loved playin for him. And no I’m not takin anything away from Doc Cannon so don’t even think that you can come back and say I am. I’m still of the oopinion that Doc’s goin to pull thru and be back rootin for the Purple and Gold real soon.

ND may have been 4-4 vs LSU but they also won four National Championships (7 if you go by Bama standards). The doc with southernpatriots knows Dr. Cannon well as do the Williams brothers who practice in South Carolina. I am going to try to reach them all with this news.

Ole Miss players who tried to tackle Billy Cannon that Halloween night remember it as if it was yesterday, they say. He broke so many tackles and near tackles and from Old Rebels players, they could not contend with Billy on either side of the ball that night.

Dr. Cannon has my prayers for a quick and complete recovery.
