As part of Bob Stoops‘ coaching staff shakeup at Oklahoma, Jackie Shipp earlier this month found himself on the outside of the OU football program looking in.
Less than two weeks later, the veteran assistant officially bounced back from the abrupt split.
Confirming a week’s worth of speculation, Arizona State announced Tuesday that Shipp has been hired as defensive line coach. Shipp had spent the past 14 years in that capacity with the Sooners.
“I am thrilled to announce the hire of veteran coach Jackie Shipp to my staff at Arizona State,” said ASU head coach Todd Graham in a statement. “I could not have found a candidate who was a better fit for what we need at this time. Jackie is one of the best defensive line coaches in college football and our linemen will benefit from his leadership and mentoring. We just became a better football program with the appointment of Jackie Shipp. He’s a top-flight recruiter with contacts in the states of Oklahoma, Texas and California. He will recruit all areas for us with special emphasis on the state of California.”
Because of the addition of Shipp, defensive coordinator Paul Randolph, who held the title of line coach, will now be responsible for linebackers. Additionally, defensive passing game coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ball has been promoted to co-defensive coordinator.
