Hazell brings some ‘Orange Crush’ to Purdue

The assistant merry-go-round continues Thursday, with Purdue the latest to close a coaching opening ahead of the start of spring practice.

Boilermakers head coach Darrell Hazell announced this morning that Rubin Carter has been hired to coach the defensive line. Carter comes to West Lafayette after spending the 2012 season at Towson.

Carter has spent more than half of his 26-year coaching career at the collegiate level, including stops at New Mexico (2009-11), Temple (2004-05), Maryland (1997-98), San Jose State (1995-96) and Howard (1989-93). He also spent seven years as a line coach in the NFL.

A 1974 All-American nose tackle at Miami, Carter spent 12 seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos as part of the famed “Orange Crush” defense.

“I love what Coach Carter brings to Purdue,” Hazell said. “He is a 12-year NFL veteran with over 25 years of coaching experience on all different levels. He has been a head coach, spent seven years with three NFL teams and coached on the college and high school levels. He is a great man that our players will learn a tremendous amount from both on and off the field.”

While Hazell has filled one hole, there’s likely to be another one in short order. Yesterday, it was reported that offensive line coach Jim Bollman is leaving to take (chuckle) over as Michigan State’s offensive coordinator.
