BYU, Bronco talking extension

Much to the chagrin of what’s a surprisingly sizable segment of the fan base, BYU is looking to extend what’s already been, by today’s standards at least, a long-term relationship with their head football coach.

Broncos coach Bronco Mendenhall confirmed to the Deseret News Saturday that he and the school are working on the terms of a new contract that would keep him in Provo beyond the upcoming season. Mendenhall’s current deal runs through the 2013 season.

There was no word on either the length or the value of the new deal.

Mendenhall will be entering his ninth season at the school with a career mark of 74-29, a winning percentage of .7184. Legendary Cougars coach LaVell Edwards, inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004, retired with a winning percentage of .7179.

The Cougars, coming off an 8-5 season that included a Poinsettia Bowl win over San Diego State, will kick off spring practice Monday.
