With the seven departing basketball schools taking the Big East name with them, the schools formally known as Big East football members are searching for a new name with about $100 million in their pocket.
It should be pointed out that the “America 12 Conference” is just an idea at this point, nothing more. Other ideas are under consideration too. It’s the much larger equivalent of securing a domain name when you’re starting a website.
That said, a minor suggestion: drop any name that features a number. The Big East, of all conferences, should understand this quite well by now as approximately 10,000 schools have come and gone through the league over the past couple of years. Give or take a thousand or two, of course.
But that’s not to say the Big East is far off in brainstorming its new naming options; quite the contrary, actually. Drop the number and suddenly the Big East is now the America Conference. (In the interest of full disclosure, I’m partial to this name because I came up with it on my NCAA Football ’13 dynasty. Custom conferences FTW!) Or, let’s make it possessive: America’s Conference. Maybe even drop a vowel: ‘Merica’s Conference. The idea of a title sponsor has even been thrown out there: “‘Merica’s Conference presented by Pabst Blue Ribbon” rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?
All of these are relatively fool-proof in nature as any negativity directed toward them automatically results in hating America. And you don’t hate America, do you, America?
Didn’t think so.
Also, I like America 12 as a conference name because #MERICAtion seems fun.
