APSome links from around college football on a Saturday…
- Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce West Virginia’s newest head coach: Dana Horsewomen.
- Not completely football related, but the Columbus Dispatch has a good feature on Rhabdomyolysis in athletes. Recall that more than a dozen Iowa football players were diagnosed two years ago.
- The New Orleans Times-Picayune features this piece on new LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.
- South Carolina quarterback Dylan Thompson isn’t seeking attention anymore.
- Some video of USC’s quarterback drills from spring practice.
- How much could high profile college football players make with endorsements?
- Get to know BYU’s new receiver’s coach, Guy Holliday.
- Former Michigan State George Saimes has sadly passed away at the age of 71 after a battle with leukemia.
In pro tennis, even players ranked in the 300′s get endorsement deals that give them free gear and associated “swag” (swag meaning free things, not referring to the rap video definition). This included a wardrobe of (e.g.) Nike apparel – clothing, shoes, etc. It could mean Nike-branded notebooks for school, heck I could see a company such as Dell or Sony signing teams-worth of players to say they play on “team Sony”, giving them Laptops, mp3 players, phones, etc.
The article linked above asks what is the scenario for the “Tim Tebows” of college football – but it’s just as important if not more to point out the effect it would have on average cfb player, who would probably not be shooting national commercials, but would probably get some free stuff for being team Reebok/Dell/etc.
Interesting how the Deadspin article about “Dana Horsewomen” began with, “West Virginia’s not known for its excelsior journalism…”
“Excelsior journalism”? Pot, meet kettle.
The Jim Kleinpeter feature on Cam Cameron was well researched (for a sportwriter that is “unusual and refreshing” as southernpatriots says) and interesting. Learned many things I did not know. I don’t normally read the Times Picayune sports pages, but prefer The Advocate.
I think I am now a convert to the opinion that Cam Cameron may be the best addition to the LSU team in some years and should make a huge difference with the offense. Finally LSU has an OC who is offensively minded and has a penchant for involving all players in the offense. That would help avoid not giving the great LSU RB the ball in the 4th quarter after he was so successful in the 3rd quarter.
