Ex-Wazzu coach named to Utah State staff

The filling in of coaching holes continues across the country, with Utah State the latest close a “help wanted” sign hanging on its coaching staff.

The Aggies announced Monday that Matt Wells has hired Dave Ungerer as both running backs coach and special teams coordinator. The hiring completes Wells’ first USU staff.

“Dave brings a wealth of special teams experience into the meeting room and onto the field during game day,” said Wells. “He has a lot of experience, having worked with three Pac-12 schools and one Southeastern Conference school, and that will be beneficial to both our staff and student-athletes. We are happy to welcome Dave and his family into the Aggie football family.”

Ungerer spent 2010 and 2011 at Washington State, serving in the same positions he’ll hold with the Aggies. He was out of coaching in 2012 after not being retained by new Wazzu head coach Mike Leach.

A coach at the collegiate level since 1983, Ungerer has held jobs on numerous staffs at the FBS level, including stops at Oregon (2007-08), Alabama (2003-06), Cal (2002), Maryland (1992-96) and Rutgers (1983-84).

“Utah State is a program on the rise and I’m very excited to be a part of that,” said Ungerer. “I have been very impressed by Coach Wells and his organizational plan to continue to take Utah State up the ladder as far as college football teams are concerned. I am very impressed with Logan, Cache Valley and Utah State University and anxious to get started.”
