Michigan adds three years to Mattison’s contract

Since the end of the 2012 season, many a coordinator has been on the receiving end of a new contract that involved a raise and/or extension.  None, though, may have deserved an enhanced deal more than Greg Mattison.

In that vein, UM announced Friday that Brady Hoke‘s defensive coordinator has agreed to a three-year extension of his original contract.  Mattison is now signed through the 2016 season.

The coordinator was entering the final season of his original contract.

The release announcing the extension made no mention of any financial enhancements being included with the extension.  Mattison’s original deal paid him $750,000 annually.

“Greg has proven to be one of the top coordinators in the country, college or pro, and he is regarded as one of the best recruiters in college football,” said athletic director David Brandon in a statement. “Greg’s resume speaks for itself, and he has done great things with our defense in his two years with the program. He has great passion for the University of Michigan and for the young men that represent our team. We are glad to have Greg in the fold for the foreseeable future.”

“Great things” might actually be an understatement on Brandon’s part.

In 2010, the year before Mattison’s arrival in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines were 108th in scoring defense (35.2 points per game) and 110th in total defense (450.8 yards per game).  It was the worst defense in the history of the storied program.

The year after, with Mattison in charge of that side of the ball, the unit improved to sixth in scoring defense (17.4 ppg) and 17th in total defense (322.1 ypg).  In 2012, they were 20th (19.8 ppg) and 13th (320 ypg) in those two categories, respectively.

“Michigan is such a special place and it’s exciting to know I’ll have the opportunity to coach at the greatest program in college football for the next four years, and hopefully long after,” the 63-year-old Mattison said. “Part of the reason I came back here is because I wanted to work with Brady (Hoke) again, and every day I’m thankful I made that decision. There’s not a better coach or man to work for.”

As a fan just saying, haven’t the buckeyes won 8 out 9 against the wolverines????

‘My’ and ‘JRS’… CMon… get with it will ya???

Mattison has coached for 2 games against the bucknuts and is 1:1… and last years loss WA NOT due to his D… it was the O that failed to do what was necessary.

OSU – 26 pts scored while ave 37 ppg
UM – 21 pts scored while ave 29 ppg

Michigan O only had to be ‘average’ to win it.

Love shoelace… but very glad we’ll be running a real offense starting this year.

Well deserved. Mattison is one of the best coaches in the country.

    Pole,

It’s great that um does good against teams like Indy northwestern minn Illi but all I keep thinking about is what alabama va tech and sc did to them the last 2 seasons.

  7. elwaysmilehighdenver says: Mar 15, 2013 7:51 PM

    jrs45……Michigan beat V Tech in the 2012
Sugar Bowl, and SC beat Michigan in the final minute of this past seasons bowl.
    Is that what you remember?

jrs45 = troll, most likely of the buckeye variety.

  9. jrs45 says: Mar 15, 2013 8:16 PM

    SC 33 PTS 426 YDS
    Ala 41 PTS 431 YDS
    VT 20 PTS 377 YDS
    Northwestern 31 PTS 431 YDS

    That’s what I remember ;)

    Roll tide Barney!

  11. polegojim says: Mar 15, 2013 11:54 PM

JR… ; ) nice attempt to deflect… you ignored all the facts included in JTs post… and you were only talking about OSU to begin with… which is all I care about for this discussion.

The first sign of a weak argument is deflection and throwing out irrelevant info…

The post is about Mattison’s overall effort and results… don’t you worry, he’ll continue to improve and take care of business… stand alert.

How’s jr wrong he is 100% right Michigan hasn’t done crap against the Buckeyes the last 13 yrs an 2 yrs ago when they did beat us they got lucky because Miller cldnt hit a receiver and we still lost by 6 Michigan ur fans and state sucks.

  13. jrs45 says: Mar 16, 2013 10:15 AM

    Pole,

What started this was someone referring to him getting a bonus against slowing down the suckeyes correct?

All I said was haven’t the suckeyes destroyed you guys for many years now.

As for your defense my stats are correct. 41-14 Roll Tide!

  14. polegojim says: Mar 16, 2013 10:48 AM

JR – I didn’t deny the Tide score.

The point of the post is that Michigans D is vastly improved under Mattison… but as I said, still has a ways to go to be a national ‘top power’… and they will do it.

@bengals… hahahahahahaha… childish as typical. Thanks for the morning laugh! You lost because… YOU LOST… and Miller was the one who was crap. Wow – bucknut logic at its best… thanks again.

The fact that a Bama fan is commenting on this as much as he is shows Michigans relevance. Back to back elite recruiting classes and another on the way due to Project 135

  16. therealgts says: Mar 16, 2013 11:32 AM

Oh and don’t forget…..Da’Shawn Hand is in Ann Arbor today courtesy of Mattison. Worth every penny

I brought up the game 2 yrs ago because some Dbag brought up how Michigan wld have beat us this year if their offensive side of the ball didnt stink an its not me that made u laugh its u wakin up an seeing Michigan colors u poor guy.

  18. dkhhuey says: Mar 17, 2013 4:32 PM

    @pole

I had the pleasure to attend The Game last year and partied with a few of your boys at The Shoe! Not bad guys for TTUN fans – they had never been to The Game in Columbus and they were elated that they weren’t skinned on sight! We laughed all morning that at exactly 11:31 all the nice play was over and the knives, bats, brass knuckles, and shivs were coming out and there would be blood!

Good times at the greatest rivalry on the planet!!!

If it is relevant to go back 8 to 13 years ago to see how many times the Buckeyes have beaten the Wolverines we might as well go all the way back, and I believe that Michigan still has the edge.
