Ben Kerchival says, “Get off my lawn you whippersnappers…” Read some quotes from these kids, they love getting bombed with text and the attention it brings.

I don't know who this Ben "Kerchival" is, but he sounds like a square.

For real though, think about what you're saying.

The NCAA has become the sports version of the IRS: A rulebook as thick as an L.A. phone book.

Unfortunately for the fan the motivations are the same: People justifying their jobs by writing rules ad nauseum and other people making a career out of creatively interpreting said obscure rules.

Jimbo- totally agree with your post, and the others along the same lines. Not a Boise fan, but getting punished for letting a recruit sleep on a floor is ridiculous.

As for these rules, either way, the to kids will still go to the to schools. Actually, would have liked to have seen the B1G take this chance to reinvest all that football money back into football. Instead, they was against the rule changes. Preferring the status quo is crazy, because the status quo is that they aren't that good.

Jumped from reading about insanity in NFL rule changes to insanity in the NCAA--and none of this insanity will make the game any safer, any more fair, or keep kids from being less exploited. As jimbo and alligatorsnapper said, it's sad that a coach can't take his team out for a burger--and for every pointless rule discarded, another 10 will be added. The rulemakers are choking the life from the game.

For the kids that actually gets tired of being bugged to death and inundated with phone calls and printed data, this provides no real relief for them. For those kids wanting to stretch their 15 minutes of fame to at least several months, it makes no difference.
These rules changes don't mean a hill of beans as long as they can keep contacting the kid, with no silent period or let up until he signed the papers. I guess one could say, if the kid really doesn't want to be constantly hit by a barrage of contact, it could turn him off but I doubt that happens much.
What these new rules do is insure a college coach, will be 24/7 recruiting 365 days a year. I am also wandering how many assistants will be able to contact in behalf of the college.
It all seems like a big show actually meant to lessen the NCAA's responsibility, and I do not see it leading to a lot less recruiting violations in the long run. I think it is more closely, the NCAA raising the white flag, and saying they can't enforce rules, and giving the green light to some coaches to cheat or at least get as close to the edge as possible now. If the NCAA is somehow expected the high school coach or the kids themselves to constantly be vigilant and control contacts, good luck on that.

Over 1200 pages of NCAA regulations, more added each year. The NCAA suspends two regulations, but adds another 200 they don't tell us about. That is what they did in the past, I doubt things have changed so much now.

Why not go over line by line, regulation by regulation, and see which ones are outdated, ridiculous, onerous, arbitrary, and capricious?

Several of the more influential university presidents needs to make that petition to Dr. Mark Emmert, his executive committee, and the NCAA and they need to get on this now.

Oh well, the deregulation just means the same 100 guys are going to get even more inundated with messages.

Personally, I think the NCAA would be better served by examining their rules with an eye to common sense. Penalties because an oversized kid got an extra brownie at dinner or cream cheese on his bagel after a two hour practice? Penalize for bags of cash, hookers, etc all you want, but the ticky tack stuff like penalizing a coach for buying his team burgers from In and Out after a big win needs to go.
