If one of the best names in college football is to continue his playing career, it won’t be at Ole Miss.
It was confirmed by the school Thursday morning that Rebels head coach Hugh Freeze has dismissed Philander Moore from the football program. Other than violation of unspecified team rules, no reason for the dismissal was given.
However, the Oxford Eagle reports that the soon-to-be senior wide receiver was involved in an incident late Saturday night that led to his arrest. Moore was charged with domestic violence simple assault after Oxford police responded to a disturbance and was briefly detained at a local detention center.
No details surrounding the disturbance were given.
Moore was a highly-touted JUCO recruit who signed with Ole Miss in January of 2011 but never lived up to the hype. Playing in 18 games the past two seasons, including one start, Moore totaled just nine receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown.
In 2011, Moore was one of four Rebel players suspended for one game for the garden-variety violations of unspecified team rules.
