Brian Bohannon leaves Georgia Tech for Kennesaw State

Kennesaw State won’t begin actually playing real football games for a couple of years down the road, but the program already has its leader in place.  And, even better, he’ll be a head coach with both extensive FBS experience and a deep history in the state of Georgia.

In a release, Kennesaw State announced that Brian Bohannon has been hired as the school’s first-ever head coach.  Bohannon has spent the past five seasons at Georgia Tech, serving as the Yellow Jackets’ quarterbacks/B-backs coach.

Bohannon will now leave his long-time mentor to lead a program that will begin play in 2015.

“Let me start by saying how excited I am to be the first-ever Kennesaw State head football coach,” Bohannon said in a statement. “Kennesaw State is a special place with a great student body, administration and faculty, and I am just excited about the opportunity.

“I also want to give special thanks to University President Dr. Dan Papp, Vaughn Williams, the search committee and the people I met with during my interview. I thoroughly enjoyed the process, everything was run in a first-class manner, and I can’t wait to get started. My goal is to work toward developing the total student-athlete in the classroom, on the field of play and in the campus and local communities.”

Bohannon has spent 17 seasons as a member of Paul Johnson-led coaching staffs, including the previously-noted five seasons with the Yellow Jackets.  His knowledge of the state, though, extends well beyond his time at Tech.

A native of Griffin, Ga., Bohannon was a four-year letter-winning wide receiver with the Georgia Bulldogs before spending five of his first six seasons as an assistant at Georgia Southern.

“This is an extremely exciting moment in Kennesaw State University history,” Williams said. “Coach Bohannon embodies every value, characteristic and skill set that we look for when choosing head coaches to lead our student-athletes. Brian has distinguished himself as a servant leader who will build a program the right way. I can’t wait to kick off that football in 2015.”
