Sandusky: I don’t know if Paterno had suspicions

Jerry Sandusky AP

Jerry Sandusky has spoken from behind prison bars where he will spend what essentially amount to the rest of his life.

In an interview with filmmaker John Ziegler, who is currently putting together a documentary called “Framing Paterno”, the former Penn State defensive coordinator continued to dispute the claims he is a serial pedophile, most notably the one involving Victim 2 in 2001. Sandusky also claims he didn’t think Joe Paterno had suspicions about him.

“If he (Paterno) absolutely thought I was (a pedophile), I’d say no,’’ Sandusky said. “If he had a suspicion, I don’t know the answer to that.”

You can view portions of Sandusky’s interview as well as Matt Lauer‘s interview with Ziegler from the Today Show in the video below.

I do not know a punishment fitting to Sandusky which would be allowed under our civilized code of jurisprudence.

The largest scandal in history in higher education continues to make news and leave devastation in its wake.

I continue hearing about the repercussions of Sandusky’s rape of children and it is devastating. Most do not want media attention. Some have moved away from the area, trying to live their lives away from things that would remind them of the ongoing abuse they suffered. Most are not suing.

We are to believe anything that a man who has yet to admit to anything he has done? If there is any justice in this world he will be treated the same way he treated those kids

Congrats to John in standing his ground against Lauer’s attempts to discredit him, His efforts to clear Joe’s name remain highly commendable.

If even the Paterno family is disowning your attempts to clear JoePa’s name, then you really have to wonder what this is all about.

The circumstances of Penn State and the Catholic Church are the same – the cover-up of child abuse. For now, it seems PSU gets the headlines every time Sandusky opens his mouth or there are rumors of moving the Paterno statue (ok – probably hyperbole but you get my point).

Sandusky is a pedophile, just like many others. Fortunately, he’s in a place where he can no longer harm children, but others remain on the loose and continue to cause destruction. The story here (and in the Catholic Church) is to learn to identify this type of behavior and to have the courage to act.

I suspect Sandusky will continue his innocence drone for the remainder of his life. Sooner or later, the press will lose interest, at least I hope so. He and his ilk do not deserve this type of platform.

Likewise, the Paterno family will continue their attempts rehabilitate the Coach’s legacy. In the end, I think the best they can hope for is an acceptance that Joe was a good man with significant accomplishments, but who wasn’t without flaws and who made one very large and costly mistake.

I hope Jerry Sandusky has the same thing done to him in prison as he did to these kids. The man (??) is a monster.

So Updyke kills some trees, can’t talk to the media. This wonderful contribution to the gene pool rapes kids and is in a movie?

The only update on him that I want is how his relationship with his newest boyfriend is going…

  11. geo1113 says: Mar 25, 2013 5:01 PM

If Sandusky is not a pedophile, why would he even think Paterno might have suspected.

The Paterno apologists have crossed from misguided zealots to a cancer on the university and community. The more they agitate, the more they harm the institution, in the name of rehabilitating that which cannot be rehabilitated. As Ken Frazier, Merck CEO and PSU board member put it this week to a board candidate running on the Paterno rehab platform, if you believe the Freeh report does not demonstrate Paterno’s culpability in abetting Sandusky’s eluding the responsible authorities, then you must also believe that O.J. did not kill his wife and Ron Goldman. Unfortunately, we will have to endure this nonsense until they all die, too.

    Dear 4356gejm,

Here is the full quote from Mr. Frasier. Keep in mind it was directed towards Bill Cluck, an African-American candidate for the BOT:

“I believe that we are entitled to look at the words and contemporaneous emails and other documents that draw the conclusions that we need to draw as a university. We are not subject to the criminal beyond-a-reasonable-doubt standard, and you’re a lawyer, so you can stop pretending that you think we are. We can take employment actions, we can take corrective actions without any need to resort to the so-called due process, reasonable doubt standard, and I don’t care if they are acquitted. And you know the difference. If you cared about that, you are one of the few people in this country that looks like you who actually believes the O.J. Simpson not guilty verdict was correct. The fact of the matter is, those documents say what they say, and no amount of hand waving will ever change what those documents say.”

That looks like you. To an African-American about O.J. Simpson. Not exactly the guy I’d be quoting or the quote I’d be using there, sport. Although you did a wonderful job of whitewashing it.

How many times do you people have to be told? Sandusky is in segregation for his protection, he’s not in general population! “Bubba” isn’t going to do anything to him.

  18. mgavin78 says: Mar 25, 2013 10:12 PM

Why does he get to be on TV… Media sucks sometimes.

  19. dirtyharry1971 says: Mar 25, 2013 11:12 PM

This so called film will disprove nothing, ped state should be closed down!!

  20. dawglb says: Mar 25, 2013 11:50 PM

Please don’t give him any more press. What he thinks is not really news. It’s basically irrelevant, at this time.

  21. dkhhuey says: Mar 26, 2013 8:15 AM

Joe Paterno knew, he covered it up, he turned a blind eye toward it and allowed Sandusky to anally rape and sexually molest more innocent children.

God will judge Sandusky when it’s time (just like He will judge all of us when our time comes). In the meantime, I’d love to see everyone boycott this “documentary”… read: opportunistic way for a so-called filmmaker to make money. I’d also implore the news media to refrain from “reporting” anything related to Sandusky except to report his passing. THAT would be responsible journalism, in my humble opinion. Ben, JT, this includes you guys please.

John Ziegler is an assclown with absolutely no legitimate credibility on ANY subject. Even Piers Morgan (who could be described similarly) tore him apart.

  25. olderlion says: Mar 27, 2013 5:06 PM

At least he’s trying hard to help restore JoPa’s good name. That in itself is worthy and not to be tarnished with such poorly written comments. If you respect left-winged Piers Morgan, then I know where you stand. A Brit who is doing all he can to tear down this country!

  26. blastfurnaceknows says: Mar 28, 2013 3:02 PM

I see olderlion that you are another one of the great unwashed and illiterate of the cult of Paterno. When I wrote that Morgan could be described similarly, I was not paying him a compliment, nor was it anywhere near a signal of respect. What the statement says is that he, too, could be described as an assclown with no credibility on ANY subject. But, don’t let obvious facts (like his complicity in the ongoing rape of children by his long-time colleague) get in the way of your worship at the altar of Penn State and Paterno.

Really, Penn Staters only do themselves further disservice when the write and/or speak sometimes.

  27. amosalanzostagg says: Mar 29, 2013 5:40 PM

The only person that can restore his “good name” is dead. JoePa did a lot of good, however NO amount of “rehabilitation” by Penn State Board members will ever change the fact that JoePa along with Curley,Schultz, and Spanier allowed a monster access to young boys to do heinous things to.

JoePa will be judged on his last days, not what his overall balance of work was.

    sort of like,

“Other than that Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?”

People will remember the final event more than JoePa’s wins or that the library is named after him…. and nothing people say or do to burnish his tarnished reputation will help.
