Urban Meyer supporting Florida Gulf Coast in NCAA tourney

Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer yells to his players during the first half of their NCAA college football game against Michigan at Ohio Stadium in Columbus AP

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has a few ties to this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament — specifically, this week’s Sweet 16 round. Meyer’s current employer, Ohio State, will take on Arizona this Thursday. Meanwhile, Meyer’s former employer, Florida, plays this year’s Cinderella, 15-seed Florida Gulf Coast, on Friday.

Meyer’s rooting interest in the Arizona-Ohio State game is a no brainer, but his connection to FGCU has the Buckeyes coach pulling for the Eagles over the Gators. Meyer’s daughter, Gigi, is a FGCU volleyball player. So when the two teams tip-off Friday night, Meyer will be going with the underdog.

Meyer coached at Florida from 2005-10 and won two national titles with the Gators before retiring for one season and working with ESPN as a color analyst. Had Billy Donovan‘s team been matched up against anyone else, we’re sure Meyer would be pulling for Florida.

But, family is family, and FGCU has been far and away the most fun team to watch this tourney. So they have that going for ’em.

Makes you wonder why he had to leave Gainesville and go to Ohio to “spend more time with his family” when his daughter goes to FGCU.

I think the primary reason was his health, but either way it seems like it was an excuse because he’s right back to coaching in a high-pressure environment.

Good for you Urban. He got 2 nat’l championships and now coaches at his dream job.

who’s to say OSU is Meyer’s “dream job”? He’ll claim the next place is his “dream job” too

Whitdog23 — He was born in Ohio and he was a graduate assistant at Ohio State under Earl Bruce. It’s not that big of a stretch. I will, however, give you that he said many years ago that Ohio State and Notre Dame would be his dream jobs (he was an assistant for the Fighting Irish).

I remember when he was in Utah he had always said nd and OSU were his dream jobs.

The Gators should win this big, but they have been known to lay eggs throughout the season. I just don’t see FGCU doing well against the Gator D. The Eagles are fun and play wide open ball, but that can turn into a turnover fest if you play a team with a solid D and some physical bigs. The Gators are the best D in the country for majors (they are technically 3rd behind W. Ill and Stephen Austin), so they match up works in their favor if they have their heads straight (not a given).

No need to bash UM, everyone knows that he is a liar and a hypocrite, the “latest issue” of his daughter playing at FGCU while he is closer to her at OSU is well known. He is a man of little character, but a winning coach.
