USC’s depth at tight end takes another hit

USC v UCLA Getty Images

USC lost its leading receiving tight end, Xavier Grimble, for the remainder of the spring last month because of a fractured chest. Now, the Trojans have lost another tight end for the spring because of injury.

It was announced Thursday that Randall Telfer had knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus and will miss four to six weeks recovering. USC’s spring game is this weekend and depth figures to be an issue for the entire team as 20 players will be out with injuries.

As a sophomore last season Teifer finished with 100 yards receiving and four touchdowns, compared to his 273 yards and five touchdowns in 2011. With Grimble out, Teifer was looking for more reps this spring and should see the field for USC this fall.

Agh, tough situation. Lane is totally right in his logic of returning to tough practices to try to not have a team of cupcakes anymore, but unfortunately EVERYONE is getting injured.

This may be truly the first time the sanctions have really, really hurt SC.

We’ll see how this plays out when the season starts and how many guys are still on the shelf.

I’d bet fall camp is extremely minimal on contact and most injured players are held out. Even though USC opens up on the road, they are @ Hawaii so they should be able to work out the kinks and get used to contact in live game action there. The next week, though, they get Wazzu at home. They’ll be alright.

Four to six weeks is pretty pessimistic for meniscus surgery. It’s minimally invasive and you’re usually up and around within a few days, especially for a youngster in good shape.

Knowing how Kiffin doesn’t like to reveal much, I’m hoping this isn’t worse than he’s letting on, as the team is thin enough at too many positions. They’re thinking of turning Marquise Lee into a cornerback.
