Report: Trickett to decide between WVU, USF

Less than 24 hours after it was announced he had received a release from his Florida State scholarship, it appears there are already a pair of front-runners for Clint Trickett‘s services.

Citing unnamed sources, Mitch Vingle of the Charleston Gazette has reported that the quarterback will decide between USF and West Virginia for a transfer destination as he looks to continue his collegiate playing career.

Per Vingle, a visit to Morgantown is expected in very short order. The Mountaineers will hold their annual spring game Saturday and Trickett (pictured, left) could be in attendance.

Trickett’s father, FSU assistant Rick Trickett, is from Masontown, WV, and was an assistant coach at WVU from 1975-79 and then again from 2001-06. He left for FSU following his second stint at his home state’s flagship institution.

The connection to the Bulls appears to be centered on the recruiting trail. USF’s new head coach, Willie Taggart, recruited Trickett as an assistant at Stanford before the son ultimately decided to join the father in Tallahassee. The interest on the part of both parties appears to be sincere as TomahawkNation.com wrote that “some close to the USF program expect Trickett to transfer there.”

Trickett was also recruited by USF leading up to signing day in 2010. There’s no word yet on a visit to the Bulls, however.

Another potential candidate appears to be an SEC program, with Noles247.com reporting that Kentucky is a possibility. New Wildcats head coach Mark Stoops was the Seminoles’ defensive coordinator prior to his hiring by UK and is, obviously, very familiar with what Trickett would bring to the table.

Because Trickett will graduate next month, he will be eligible to play immediately in 2013 if he lands at the FBS level.
