Surprise! Alabama opens Week 1 as 22-point favorite over VaTech

I’m not a betting man, first and foremost because I’m the absolute worst at picking games and point spreads. The worst. Coupled with that piece of information, I like to keep my money.

But that’s besides the point, which is this: opening lines for key Week 1 games from 5Dimes are out. And they look like this:

Tursday, Aug. 29
North Carolina at South Carolina (-14.5)
USC at Hawaii (+19)

Saturday, Aug. 31
Alabama vs. Virginia Tech (+22) (Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta, Ga.)
LSU vs. TCU (+6) (Cowboys Classic in Arlington, Tx.)
Georgia at Clemson (-2)

Monday, Sept. 2
Florida State at Pittsburgh (+8.5)

Not surprisingly, Alabama, the defending national champs, opens up as a 22-point favorite over Virginia Tech. The Tide have doneextremely well in neutral site games under Nick Saban, and early oddsmakers believe this year won’t be any different. But a pair of other Saturday games — LSU vs. TCU and Georgia vs. Clemson — have the makings of being great matchups.

Looks like the first of many Alabama blow outs this year. If they make it out of A&M with a win that’s pretty much it for the season.

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. They still have to play Chattanoogie.

That A&M (along with LSU) game is giving me Pepto moments

A&M and Bama may be the best game of the season.

I know Alabama has had a lot of success in season-openers under Saban…but TWENTY-TWO POINT favorites? I think this has at least as much to do with the how underwhelming Va. Tech was last year as it does with how good the bookies think the Tide is this season.

    Uhhh what is Tursday??

Does that mean they’re going to play the first half on Tuesday and finish the games on Thursday?

I’m reading where Georgia State is their trap game. That could end their quest for a three peat.

I’m not even 100% sure that LSU can be counted on for a good game this year. Plenty of talent on that roster, you just can’t be sure if they show up or not these days.

You left out the Mississippi State vs Oklahoma State Texas Kickoff Classic game in Houston, TX on August 31, 2013.

    To Brian Basher:
No silly, Tursday is the day after Wenesday, which is the day after Tusday. Get it?

Georgia, LSU & FSU cover easily.
South Carolina should cover provided they manufacture some offense.
Based on VT’s performance of late, Bama should have their way w/ the Hokies. 22+ pts? Probably…but too early to lay money on it.

UGA a 2 pt dog to Clemson…. Wow!

I love the respect that A&M is getting but I can’t imagine A&M being favored in that game. Plus over the last 10-15 years, last year not withstanding, we’ve endured a lot of stinging losses, so I’m hopefully optimistic about that game but realistically cautious about my expectations.

I do believe that the A&M v Bama game is the West title game. LSU just has too hard of a schedule and lost too much talent to only have 1 loss.

How often do you see the game that will probably decide the division as the first conference game??

The two TD spread on NC vs SC seems high to me, but I don’t know anything about the current roster of either of those teams except that one of them has Jadaveon Clowney and the other one doesn’t.

To mullendawg: Yeah I get it you’re saying PFT needs to teach their writers how to use spell check…

  16. v2the4 says: May 3, 2013 2:43 AM

FYI Mullendog….they are showing Oklahoma state as -11.5 vs Miss St for their showdown in Houston.

Alabama is up to a 24 pt favorite now, LSU is up to a 7.5 pt favorite(dont see that, LSU lost 8 players from their standout defense to the nfl draft)

A&M is a 28.5 pt favorite vs Rice as of now
