Following up on its first season at the FBS level, and a couple of months ahead of its official move to a new league, Texas State has handed its head coach a little additional job security.
The school announced late last week that coach Dennis Franchione has agreed to terms on a new five-year contract. Per the terms of his new deal, Franchione will remain at his current salary until Feb. 2014, when it increases to $400,000 for the remaining years.
Last season, Franchione made a little over $360,000 in total pay.
“Coach Franchione has been a strong leader for our program, increased visibility, generated a high level of enthusiasm and instilled a strong work ethic for student-athletes on and off the field, " said TSU president Dr. Denise Trauth. “He also has helped guide the program into the coveted ranks of the Football Bowl Subdivision. There has been great buzz about being elevated to the top level of college football, and we expect more good things as our program grows.”
Franchione, previously the head coach at, among others, Alabama and Texas A&M, has been at Texas State the past two seasons. The Bobcats have gone 10-14 during that time, including 4-8 last season.
In July of this year, Texas State will move from the football-defunct WAC to the Sun Belt.
