North Carolina State enters Steven Bench fray

When it was reported last week that an SEC and American Athletic (née Big East) school were interested in Steven Bench, the speculation was that an ACC school or schools could be in the mix as well.

As it turns out, that appears to be the case.

Citing a source close to the player, ESPN.com‘s Joe Schad is reporting that North Carolina State is considered a potential transfer destination for the former Penn State quarterback as well. Mississippi State and USF are the other two schools prominently connected to Bench’s name.

Over the weekend, Bench confirmed his interest in the Bulldogs, but added that “I want everyone to know I’m open to any school and any situation.” A decision from Bench could come in the next 10-14 days.

Because of Penn State’s NCAA sanctions, Bench will be eligible to play immediately in 2013 at the FBS level. He will have three years of eligibility remaining plus a redshirt season.

As a true freshman last season, Bench appeared in two games and attempted seven passes. He and Tyler Ferguson engaged in a battle for the starting job this spring, with neither player pulling away from the other. Shortly after the end of spring, Bench announced he intended to transfer.

Incoming freshman Christian Hackenberg will also enter the Nittany Lions’ quarterback fray in summer camp, and many consider him the favorite to begin the season as the starter.
