New Mexico State’s starting QB to transfer

Shortly following the end of his first spring practice, New Mexico State’s new head coach has abruptly found himself without the Aggies’ starting quarterback in 2012.

In a press release, NMSU coach Doug Martin announced that redshirt junior Andrew Manley has been granted his release to transfer. While no specific reason for the departure was given, Martin hinted that a change in offensive philosophy played a role in the decision.

“We wish Andrew all the best,” Martin said in a statement. “Obviously with all the changes in the offensive system he didn’t fit in as well the way he may have in the past. The competition at quarterback was going to be tougher for him this season, as well as some of the family matters he has, he wanted to get closer to home. We support Andrew and his decision.”

A native of the state of Hawaii, Manley started all 12 games for the Aggies last season. That came after he had started the first three games of 2011 before suffering a season-ending injury.

In 2012, Manley passed for 2,764 yards and 18 touchdown passes.
