UCLA’s defensive front has taken a significant hit.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Bruins defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa will miss the 2013 season following hip surgery on Tuesday. Odighizuwa’s hip has been bothering him all of spring practice, which he missed, and he has already had hip surgery this year.
Once healthy, he will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Odighizuwa was expected to replace Datone Jones at defensive end this season after finishing with 44 tackles last year. Jones was selected in the first round of the NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers.
Other injured Bruins along the defensive line include nose tackle Ellis McCarthy (knee) and defense end Sam Tai (knee). Nose tackle Brandon Tuliaupupu will miss the 2013 season as well because of a knee injury he sustained in spring ball.
Updated 10:15 p.m. ET: Turns out, the chances of Odighizuwa missing the 2013 season have gone — even if it’s ever so slightly. The LA Times has updated its story from earlier and Owamagbe had a frayed rotator cuff in his hip. Officially, his timetable for return is TBD.
