Bret Bielema reverses field on SEC comments

In February of 2012, then-Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema took a verbal swing at Ohio State (and former Florida) coach Urban Meyer and his ‘crootin’ tactics when he told Matt Hayes of The Sporting News, “I can tell you this: We at the Big Ten don’t want to be like the SEC—in any way, shape or form.”

So, naturally, Bielema left the Badgers to become the head coach of Arkansas less than a year later. Now at his first SEC spring meetings, Bielema has, ahem, “altered” his stance on the SEC a little. When asked about his comments regarding Meyer last year, Bielema clarified “That was about one coach and one instance.

He also said that “In the Big Ten, we disliked the SEC because of the success they had.”

We have to admit, Bielema’s shown elite backpedal quickness (also, he’s of the “shirts optional, partying mandatory” clan). It’s no wonder he was so heavily recruited by an SEC school.

If you can’t beat success, join them!

I wonder if we are going to have an excuse-a-thon from the fans of his former conference?

Hey Ben…where did you go to college? Just wondering.

Benedict Arnold. Judas. Freedo Corleone. Brett Favre. And now Brett Beilema. Famous traitors, can we have a Traitor Mt. Rushmore? Rank them as you will…

That would be the University of North Texas, m’friend. The greatest college ever (in Denton county).

Nice Ben! From the land of “Mean” Joe Greene and Dr. Phil!

I just think it’s funny how much credit this guy gets for recent Wisconsin “success”.

Looking back, although a good run, he didn’t really do anything of major note. If simply losing a BCS game is good then I don’t want my team to be good.

Has to be a higher standard for who’s a good coach now-a-days.

Glad he’s out of the Big Ten, no class. Not that Urban is gushing with it.

Bielema knows on which side his bread is buttered. And he’s going to appease his base.

I’m confident this guy knows butter very well.

I hope Bielema loses every SEC game this year. What a phony! Big Ten football all the way. Go Blue

Fat Bielema definitely knows his butter.

Love that picture. Shave his head and it’s Curly from the Three Stooges.

Bielema had a nice run in the mostly soft Big Ten, where there’s typically only 3 or 4 decent teams each year. Lets see what he can do when he’s playing a powerhouse every week. He should have stayed at Wisconsin and continued racking up easy wins against Indiana, Iowa, Purdue, Northwestern, Minnesota, a depleted Penn State, and teams from the MAC.

He is a tool, you never know where you end up and in today’s world the media is your worst enemy!

With a few exceptions, any coach would jump at the chance to coach in the SEC.

It will be interesting to watch and see how successful he is at Arkansas. It sure seems like he has had to explain more than his fair share of things he has said to the press so far this year. Perhaps he thinks if he is in the press a lot, it will somehow help recruiting. Perhaps, if he can put together a good season and make Arkansas a competitor this year, he will find out that these young kids gravitate towards successful programs out of high school. It is too bad though, that they are hitting on him for something he said while at Wisconsin and in the big (?)ten. It was most likely jealousy of the SEC’s success and the quick rise of Meyer’s team at OSU. Now he has a chance to show his former conference how successful he can be in the SEC.

Who is Ben Kercheval? Eh, North Texas is best known for its marching band not football. Gotta make news when there isn’t any news I guess.

I totally agree with your comments except for the “Go Blue” part. Go Bucks! Beat Michigan!

    Damn straight. Recognize, fool.

He has not experienced any success in the SEC as far as I can tell. I doubt he will. All the fat guys in Arkansas won’t help his 1952 offense succeed. Won’t happen. Just ask Urban Meyer.

  21. zoellner25 says: May 29, 2013 11:21 AM

this guy is just your classic D-bag. From a Wisconsin fan to Arkansas fans, good luck with this idiot.

  22. normtide says: May 29, 2013 11:47 AM

Its no secret that B1G fans don’t like the SEC, and pretty obvious its because of the success. BB was playing up to his fan base at the time. Much like with UF’s assistant, people make to much out of this stuff.

  23. scoocha says: May 29, 2013 11:53 AM

Urban is a cheater, that surprises people?

@overratedgatorers…..ROTFLMAO, you are exactly right… shave his head and you have curly!! Now we need to decide which coaches would fit best as…. Larry and Moe!
