Barry Alvarez responds to Gee’s comments, denies calling Bielema a ‘thug’

With his remarks from a meeting last December being made public yesterday -- and apparently with no school, conference or person being spared -- Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee has had to do a lot of apologizing lately. Included in that list is Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez.

Thanks to Sports Illustrated‘s open records request, it was revealed that Gee admitted he said Alvarez thought former Badgers coach Bret Bielema was a “thug.”

In response, Alvarez issued the following brief statement Friday afternoon:

“Gordon Gee called me to apologize last week regarding comments he knew would be made public. I have never said that about Bret, nor had those feelings towards him. I accepted Gordon’s apology and consider the matter closed.”

Whether or not the matter is in fact closed on a bigger scale, with Gee’s job in some sense of jeopardy now and all, remains to be seen.
