Longhorn receiving duo suspended for season opener

Iowa St Texas Football AP

When Texas opens the 2013 season in late August at home, the Longhorns will do so without a pair of wide receivers in tow.

Thanks to a pair of separate off-field “incidents” this offseason, both Cayleb Jones (pictured) and Kendall Sanders have been suspended for the opener against New Mexico State, head coach Mack Brown revealed Monday.  Both will be eligible to return the following week as UT travels to Provo to take on BYU.

Jones and Sanders have been reinstated to the team, Brown said, and will be permitted to participate in all team-related activities.

Jones was originally charged with felony assault in connection to a mid-March incident in which he allegedly broke the jaw of a UT tennis player who was dating his former girlfriend.  The felony charge was ultimately reduced a month later, clearing the way for Jones’ return to the team.

Three weeks after Jones’ legal run-in, Sanders was charged with driving under the influence.

Both players were/are expected to compete for a starting job.

Just shows that anything short of murder is fine with todays coaches. What a of fresh air. How long before these clowns are in jail. Sick of all the crap these “kids” get away with. They will never learn because most coaches always give them a free pass.

Just another example of how the SEC let’s their athletes run amok.

    Oh wait.

Despite the depth issue at WR, as a UT alum, the penalties should have been harsher. 2 games for Sanders and his DUI and another for being so bone-headed to do it in College Station. As for Jones, should have been a minimum 4 games.

Jones broke the jaw of a University of Texas Tennis player. Cold cocked him. All because of a girl.

Jones should have his own jaw broken as soon as possible. Once he’s all healed up, play on.

And yes, pussy is now, and will always be, undefeated.

Jones, the son of former NFL all pro linebacker Robert Jones out of ECU, and nephew of former NFL all pro QB Jeff Blake, was a 5 star WR recruit when he arrived at the 40 acres last year…..kid was able to get some action, but only caught 2 passes in his true freshman year…..

the way he suckered punched that tennis player, behind a piece of tail, was real weak and is what we call around my area in Houston a “bitch made move”…you never fight over a chick…he was jealous like a mow bad he couldnt fight his way into the starting lineup last year.

Sanders was also a big time recruit coming out of Athens TX…dude was a four year varsity player, three year starter and played multiple positions…he actually has more upside than Jones because of his ability to break tackles and stretch the field….

driving under the influence is an absolute no no and dude could have killed himself or gotten seriously injured….I hope he doesnt make that mistake again.

I think the punishment for both is in line with what we have seen around the country…..Georgia is suspending their starting FS for the Clemson game…TCU is suspending their best LB for their LSU game….and while UT wont need either against New Mexico St, hopefully these young men have learned their lesson and will stay out of trouble
