Miami commit on turning away Meyer: ‘It looked like he was a baby about to cry’

Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer yells to his players during the first half of their NCAA college football game against Michigan at Ohio Stadium in Columbus AP

Oh, yeah. This is going to go over well.

Miami landed one of the top offensive lineman recruits for the 2014 class last month with the verbal pledge of Kc McDermott. It was a big pickup for the Canes, as McDermott also reportedly had scholarship offers from Alabama, Notre Dame and Ohio State, among others. But McDermott, a lifelong Miami fan, wasn’t interested in the Buckeyes and his feelings didn’t change when Meyer came to his school to see McDermott face to face.

But McDermott’s account of his interaction with Meyer is… well… it’s something! After telling Meyer he wasn’t interested in Ohio State, McDermott said the coach was shocked, as if he’d “never been told no in his life.” McDermott went on to say Meyer “looked like he was a baby about to cry. It was so funny.”

From his interview with Bleacher Report:

AK: What’s the Urban Meyer story?

KM: The Urban Meyer thing was just funny to me. He came to my school a week after I told his assistant that I wasn’t even interested in them. I told him no to his face, and it’s got to be one of the top five reactions of someone ever. His facial expression was just so funny. My coach was tearing up and had to go in his office to laugh.

AK: Talk more about coach Meyer’s face when you told him no. Was he mad, upset?

KM: More like the state of shock where the guy has literally never been told no in his life. It literally looked like a kid the first time you tell him ‘no, you can’t do something.’ It looked like he was a baby about to cry. It was so funny.

Yeesh. Not exactly flattering remarks. Embellished? Perhaps.

Now, all that’s left is to play the over/under game on how long we have before someone says those comments were taken out of context.

We’re those tears coming from his buckeyes?

  2. jrs45 says: Jun 6, 2013 7:09 PM

The u lol. Why is this even a story?

  3. manik56 says: Jun 6, 2013 7:17 PM

People really love to pick on Ohio State. The kids first Hurricane memory is probably Cie Grant throwing Ken Dorsey aside. I can’t blame him for hating OSU.

  4. thegamecocker says: Jun 6, 2013 7:17 PM

Wonder how much the “U” paid KM? This is a punk who has no clue what the word “class” means. He will fit right in with the other thugs at Miami. Perception is reality and this kid is just a big pampered punk who thinks the world owes him something. Not even worth discussing one second more…..

  5. rodge1 says: Jun 6, 2013 7:33 PM

His first memory was the refs giving Ohio State the win with the ghost-pass-interference call.

  6. palmbeachbuckeye says: Jun 6, 2013 7:48 PM

Lets see….Since Joining a decade ago, (cryMiami has NEVER won the ACC championship, NEVER played in the ACC championship game, been beaten and embarrassed in their bowl games, has a coach (Golden) with a Losing career record, is on the verge of Major NCAA sanctions, gave up an average of over 500 yds/per game last season and has become a laughing stock. The last Big Name lineman to choose Miami over Ohio State (Seantrel Henderson) completly underperformed and never became a starter. Yea, I’d say he made a good choice.

  7. niallofthenine says: Jun 6, 2013 7:59 PM

  8. bigmeechy74 says: Jun 6, 2013 7:59 PM

It makes sense the author wouldn’t tell us where the recruit was from. I’d probably leave that info out too.

  9. jtacane says: Jun 6, 2013 8:05 PM

You buckeye fans sure are sensitive. If it is irrelevant why read the article and then stick around to comment also… Anyway, I smell a rat here. Even this reporter asks him to tell him more even though he already answered the question. He is a young kid who put his foot , no leg, in his mouth. That’s it. No more, no less!
    Go Canes

  10. gr3710 says: Jun 6, 2013 8:20 PM

I wonder what Gee thinks of this.. its not like he keeps his mouth shut. too bad he’s retiring, he’s good drama

  11. thegamecocker says: Jun 6, 2013 8:23 PM

Gee is saying thank goodness the admissions dept didn’t have to make an exception for this jack-weed.

  12. necr0philia says: Jun 6, 2013 8:49 PM

@thegameschoker It’s been a while my friend. Why are you still trolling on the Canes for? I thought you were 60 something years old. With all that anger your Likely to have a heart attack and all that for some made up hatred for a team you don’t like. Question, Why do you have so much hate for something that doesn’t even know you exist?

  13. tendigitpoet says: Jun 6, 2013 9:31 PM

Nice to know some fans are still crying about the pass-interference call. You’ll have stuff like that when a team can’t stop its opponent on 4th-and-14.

  14. desal2ds says: Jun 6, 2013 10:18 PM

As Michigan fan I love hearing the buckeyes lose out on top recruits.I have to say though for this kid to go public with that information is extremely immature. And extremely vain. The U is right where he belongs with the pompous arrogant idiots. Your next assignment is keeping Olsen from hitting trees and cars when driving. Good luck

  15. normtide says: Jun 6, 2013 10:43 PM

This kid was clearly baited by the reporter. That said, you have to show a little class. You represent your parenting, and they deserve better.

  16. atxcane says: Jun 6, 2013 11:58 PM

Guys guys guys, you’re missing the most important detail of the story here:

Someone actually read an article on Bleacher Report.

  17. louhudson23 says: Jun 7, 2013 3:03 AM

Just one more young person who has been told for far too long how important that he is,when in fact he has accomplished little to nothing. Partly the Coaches(as a group) and mostly the systems fault…..when someone who has accomplished what Meyer has, from family to career is mocked and bragged upon by a “could be, maybe” high school age person and no one jerks a knot in his ass, then you know it is a broken system….Add this to the “Clowney list”……of young folks who fail to understand the difference between accomplishment and hype…..

  18. floridacock says: Jun 7, 2013 8:19 AM

@louhudson23….CLOWNEY LIST? What are you another crying Michigan /Big 10 fan? Pay attention and know your facts before making stupid statements. These are the facts pal, in 2012 he recorded 54 tackles, including a school record 23.5 tackles for loss and a school record 13.0 quarterback sacks, including 4 against Clemson. He was the 2012 recipient of the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation’s top defensive end. This all while playing adult football in the SEC! Those are accomplishments! No hype is enough for this monster. Players like him don’t come around very often.

  19. helladonks says: Jun 7, 2013 8:35 AM

Clowney list? I’d say his hype is deserved BECAUSE of his ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

  20. thegamecocker says: Jun 7, 2013 8:39 AM

You’re a moron! Jadeveon Clowney is as humble and respectful to opposing players, coaches, and fans as anyone could be. He has already established himself as a #1 NFL pick in 2014. Really don’t understand your comment putting kc Mcdermott in the same vain with Clowney. Ya dope!

  21. mediocrebob says: Jun 7, 2013 8:42 AM

This is funny. Funnier are the buckeyes on here complaining about being picked on and how irrelevant this story is, yet you read/comment on it.

Also funny are those of you ripping on an 18 year old kid who just so happens to not want to leave South Florida for COLUMBUS, OHIO. Not to mention his brother played at the U.

Seems like Urban and his fan base share something in common.

  22. thegamecocker says: Jun 7, 2013 8:48 AM

Hey buddy, how are you doing? Just need to reaffirm my position on the NCAA whipping the “U” will be receiving. It is so well deserved despite the fact that Al Golden is an excellent coach. As we’ve discussed, Miami has a high-profile nationally but no real fan base locally to speak of. It’s an anomaly for sure. The further irony is they have never won an ACC Division and ACC Championship. I dare say that because the ACC is such a basketball-centric league, the better football teams in the conference like Fl. State, Clemson, Va. Tech, UNC, are not candidates for National Championship consideration. Instead of making football better for the conference, they have been pulled down to the level of the other schools.

  23. paulhargis53 says: Jun 7, 2013 9:00 AM

Boy, that suckcocker guy has some serious issues if he’s in his 60’s and taking a college game this seriously. Some Miami alum must have poked him in the fartbox when he was a younger man.

  24. thegamecocker says: Jun 7, 2013 9:02 AM

Your mom was wrong…..she should have had the abortion.

  25. thraiderskin says: Jun 7, 2013 9:04 AM

I find it hilarious when Miami fans talk about the 2002 national championship game… First off, you were heavilly favored, I can remember some media heads saying the Buckeyes didn’t stand a chance, yet at the end of the game you all want to be butt hurt over one call (which was correct and would have been in every other instance in that game)? That Miami team should have never let it get there, what was little Ohio State doing taking your “awesome” team to the brink? Fact of the matter is, Ohio State wanted that win more, and poor Miami thought it should be given to them… Boo hoo.
As far as this kid is concerned, he has no class, but good luck to him and “the u” in their future.

  26. gtylermills says: Jun 7, 2013 9:19 AM

Wow I can already tell this young man has a bright future ahead of him. Hasn’t played a down in college ball and already made headlines for off-the-field comments. Can’t wait to where he’ll be in a few years. I see the term “in violation of team rules” being used sometime in this guys career.

  27. normtide says: Jun 7, 2013 9:26 AM

Sorry, but that totally reminds me of Miami vs Bama for the title in 92. Canes players were talking trash to Bama players the night before the game. Except, that game was a total one sided affair. I got no real issues with Miami, just loved that game and remember it vividly. No one gave Bama a chance, Miami was supposed to have an all time great team.

  28. gtylermills says: Jun 7, 2013 10:03 AM

As a college football fan I agree. As a Crimson Tide fane, I strongle agree!

  29. paulhargis53 says: Jun 7, 2013 11:18 AM

@suckcocker. That’s you’re comeback, tough guy? Uff. That is about as weak as it gets sausage wallet.

You’re about as dumb as they come.

  30. quitcrying says: Jun 7, 2013 11:59 AM

Meyer is such a goob anyway. I’ll never forget him nose nuzzling Tebow on the field after he got hurt that time.

  31. mramerica2013 says: Jun 7, 2013 12:19 PM

Miami fans are still crying after all of these years. In addition, Miami has been labeled “THUG U.” I hope they and McDermott enjoy being irrelevant and on probation the next three or four seasons. McDermott reflects the fan base of Miami: Classless, Clueless, and Pathetic.

  32. thegamecocker says: Jun 7, 2013 12:35 PM

Honestly, I think you have captured the essence of Miami / “THUG U”: CLASSLESS, CLUELESS, AND PATHETIC. Well done.

  33. matt24bucs says: Jun 7, 2013 1:51 PM

Urban had the same teary eyed look that he had when tebow left and florida started getting their brains beat in.

  34. paulhargis53 says: Jun 7, 2013 2:10 PM

You also happened to describe suckcocker , Mr. / Two birds with one stone, good job.

I see you chose to ignore me grandpa. Wise choice. Are you that dude on the internet that his grandson plays pranks on? He’s called “angry grandpa”.

That’s the picture I have in my head reading your posts.

  36. miamicaneddy says: Jun 7, 2013 3:38 PM

“thegamecocker” , I guess you call yourself that because your all game to have a cock in your mouth ignorant deuce bag . The University of Miami has a better and not even close graduation rate of it’s football players over the last 10 years only Stanford and Notre Dame have better numbers . So stop with the thug comments , oh how many championships have the Gamecocks won in football SEC or NCaaa , right just shut up you jealous piece of sh$t.

  37. thegamecocker says: Jun 7, 2013 5:22 PM

LOL! Your comment to me epitomizes exactly what makes Miami “THUG U”! I’m sure the likes of the alleged murderer Ray Lewis, has earned his degree from “THUG U”? What about the Drug addict, Professor Michael Irvin? I’m sure both “gentlemen” graduated Magna Cum Laude, correct? Let’s move on to your deceased former AD, Paul Dee. That fake, phony, fraud threw Southern Cal under the bus! Meanwhile, both he and Madame Shapiro were snapping pictures and shaking hands with Nevin Shapiro! LOL funny! Punks like you and your twin brother, Paul Hargis, bullies for sure, don’t frighten me all. The both of you are pathetic figures in a very troubled world called “THUG U”! Here is a little metaphor for you: “THUG YOU AND PAUL HARGIS TOO!”

  38. thegamecocker says: Jun 7, 2013 5:24 PM

suckcocker: You ought to really think about just not posting. Calling us bullies? When that’s all you do to everyone else?!

Your responses are lame. Give it up squishmitten, you’ve been exposed for the know nothing loudmouth you are.

All you’re doing now is digging yourself deeper and making a bigger fool out of yourself than you already have.

By the way, not a Miami fan. I’m just tired of seeing your ignorant ass postings.

I’m sure you’ll post something inane back, you just can’t help yourself.
Come on , dazzle us with your next bob mot. You’re a laughingstock, everyone on here knows it but you.

  46. mediocrebob says: Jun 8, 2013 9:37 AM

You’re all pathetic. I just read some of these comments (which I’m not sure if that makes me pathetic) but half of you are ripping on an 18 year old you’ve never met and the rest of you are being tough guys from behind a computer screen.

I’m sure you’re all big badasses. You should all go find this kid and let him know how you feel. I have a feeling you won’t be quite so tough.

    Oh. Here come the Irish.

  47. watchfullhose says: Jun 8, 2013 9:51 AM

Sad….someone shows interest in the kid and instead of being respectful, he shows a complete lack of class and respect.

If I were this kid’s coach, parent, or mentor, I would be extremely embarrassed. Something tells me that they aren’t.

  48. ibreathefootball says: Jun 8, 2013 10:45 AM

    1. He would rather play for a team that gets spanked in the SUN BOWL every year.

    2. Al Golden is trash and out of his elements.

    3. Miami is full of hoodlums, not just the team, but the whole damn city.

Enough said on that last 1

  49. thegamecocker says: Jun 8, 2013 11:08 AM

Let’s see….you refer to me as “suckcocker” and now you allude to poster “barkleyBLOWS” with heavy emphasis on last part of his name. Another one of your posts named yet another part of the anatomy….I believe you identified it as a “FART HOLE” if memory serves me? You seem to have a fixation on certain parts of the male anatomy. Frankly I would think you would keep your sexual preferences private on a football forum like this one. But it appears you want it noted “LOUD AND PROUD”. I guess we can all conclude that MR. PAUL HARGIS IS OFFICIALLY OUT OF THE CLOSET! I’m pleased you enjoy reading my posts and responding to them. Son, I welcome your comments and wish you peace and happiness as you move forward in your life.

  50. paulhargis53 says: Jun 8, 2013 1:16 PM

suckcocker: listen cramps, its fartBOX. Not farthole.
Didn’t you also accuse another poster and I of being bullies? Now you are going to turn around and try to bully me because of my “supposed” sexual preference?
You’re laughable, you do know that, right?

You basically just tried to throw back on me, everything I’ve said about you. Pathetic.
You don’t have one original thought in that empty cranium of yours.

I notice you didn’t bring up sausage wallet and squishmitten. Why would you? You have no earthly idea what they are.
You haven’t had pussy, since pussy had you.
Wait, thats right, you prefer to sword swallow.

Give it up old timer, you’re a one trick pony, an unoriginal one at that.
Disappear, you’ve been outed for the hack you are.
    I’m embarrassed for you.

P.S. Keep posting, you know you can’t help yourself, you just keep looking more ignorant the more that you do.
