UCLA, Hawaii add single game in 2017

Norm Chow AP

Hawaii coach Norm Chow spent three somewhat forgettable seasons as UCLA’s offensive coordinator. In 2017 he’ll return to the Rose Bowl to play his former team.

Hawaii announced on Monday it had scheduled a single road game against the Bruins for Sept. 9, 2017. The release also “announced” a home-and-home series against Kansas, which was made official last week by the Jayhawks.

“The addition of UCLA and Kansas elevates the strength of our non-conference football schedules,” said UH Athletics Director Ben Jay. “Both are top-notch programs and are the type of teams our fans want to see us play. We will continue to schedule teams from these conferences to add to our future schedules and find every opportunity to showcase our student-athletes and our university to a national audience.”

The Bruins and Rainbow Warriors met twice before in the 1930s, with UCLA winning both games.

With Hawaii added to the slate, UCLA’s 2017 schedule is complete. The Bruins are also scheduled to host Rutgers and travel to Memphis that year.

UH gets my respect for their tenacity, year after year. I’ve always been puzzled by their lack of ability to draw from the large pool of ‘robust’ physical specimens among the various Pacific islands. They should have unbeatable O and D lines.

Gotta have the coach that can connect with the local boys to keep them. J. Jones did that. I hope coach Chow can relate to these young locals and keep them home. Last few years, they’ve flown the coup.
