Top 2014 recruit offers mea culpa for Ole Miss ‘racist’ tweets

I am sorry

You just knew this was coming.

Marlon Humphrey, one of the top recruits in the Class of 2014, ignited a mini-firestorm Monday with a series of tweets directed at Ole Miss that seemingly came out of nowhere.  In those tweets, he labeled the schools as “racist” and alluded to monthly KKK marches on the campus.

In fact, one tweet stated that “when I went down there with my brother they had a KKK march.”

As expected, though, the son of former Alabama great Bobby Humphrey has publicly distanced himself from his own words and offered up an apology later that night to pretty much anyone connected to Ole Miss.

Humphrey is considered by most recruiting services to be the top player in the state of Alabama for next year’s class.  He is Rivals.com‘s No. 3 cornerback and the No. 11 player at any position.

    Too late.

You’re a master of what you say, post or tweet.

You’re a slave to what you say, post or tweet.

    Just ask Johnny Football.

This kid is a black racist who has KNOWINGLY defamed a university that doesn’t deserve it….on purpose.
He should be suspended for his first year,by the NCAA,and pay reparations to Ole Miss.
If a white recruit accused a black school of racism, he would be crucified but Humphrey is black so he can get away with it.

Well, it is the school that continues to allow fans to wave Rebel flags during games.

Mediocrebob: I currently live in AL; I have also lived in Seattle, Chicago, New York, London, Florida–and if you think that there is not a stronger current of racism in the deep south you are either blind or part of the problem.

    Sure…Miss isn’t racist:

Just last year a church in Mississippi canceled a wedding between a black couple the week before it was too occur because a black couple had never been allowed to marry on their church grounds, and the congragation threatened to fire the priest. Even though the groom’s father worked for the church.

But, sure let THE REBEL fans tell you there’s no racism on their campus as they dress in confederate uniforms and attend Old South Balls, or picket when an African American is elected to their SGA–which just happened. Or what about the African American who was beaten up because he dared to attend a frat party. Or the sororities that knowingly refuse bids to African American girls. I can continue…

Germany outlawed symbols and statements that refer to the Nazi party and Nazi support–tradition is a thinly veiled excuse to perpetuate racism.

But y’know by all means continue that Rebel yell. You show the world exactly who you are.

Well, sometimes, like a hot skillet, the truth is too hot to handle. But hey, why bother with the debate? Stupid has never lost an argument.

If I’m a coach with that kid on my radar, I definitely rethink recruiting him, as he clearly doesn’t have the maturity level needed to be productive.

  13. jackvcr says: Jun 25, 2013 5:57 PM

So this illiterate punk Humphrey tweets the message. Doesn’t have the balls to make a personal phone call to the university.

And you want someone this gutless on your team?

  14. ddweer says: Jun 25, 2013 9:27 PM

Wow Jimmy53, with such a global exposure I would have thought you’d have a ignorant stereotype. I’d say your statement is almost as stupid as those of this teenager. At least he can blame it on his youth what can you use as your excuse?

As far as your examples to rationalize your ignorance I can not dispute they occurred. My question is why not use a more recent example like Scottie Pippen being spit upon and called the n-word while eating dinner with his wife and child? Or reference the video of the man hurling racial slurs at an Asian on the highway? Both of those incidents just occurred and are posted on popular web-sights as I type. Wait a minute those didn’t occur in hot bed of racial tensions called Mississippi? Those happened in a liberal “blue” state? Wow, maybe racism is prevalent all over the country and world? Maybe it is directly correlated to ones education and how one is nurtured? Just maybe the fact that racism goes many different directions is often overlooked or understated by individuals that cloak themselves as the liberal educated elite?

However I guess it is easier to justify the immature actions of a child, compound it by stereotyping a section of the nation based upon a limited and ignorant scope of reality and turn a blind eye to the causative event which in of itself was a racial attack just as harmful too race relations as the events you used to rationalize your point of view! Me thinks not you mental midget!

Wow, I obviously touched a nerve. Perhaps you and your analyst can figure that out on your own time.

You don’t know me, and fortunately I don’t know you. Keep your petty anger–just that–your’s.

None of the statements I said were false, and to quote you “I can not dispute they occurred.”

And to paraphrase my earlier statement: ddweer, with your words “You show the world exactly who you are.”

I would move out of those states as fast as I could…

    Buh-bye…

    Jimmy, Jimmy,Jimmy

Kappa Alpha, a duly recognized national fraternity, does have the Old South Ball every spring in which confederate uniforms are worn and women wear ante bellum dresses. The black fraternities and sororities are alive and well at all the major universities in the South and all over the nation. Can you name a national chartered fraternity or sorority that has discriminated on applicants based on color or creed in the South? Because that would make national headlines.

I can’t explain why racism still exists. It is practiced all over the world by all races.

The South can be very accommodating. When I attended Alabama back in the sixties, whites and blacks alike did not like northerners attending the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. Why? Many did not like that many of Northerners were of the Jewish faith and the semitic culture. They could not gain admission to northern universities, yet Alabama and other southern schools, particularly the University of Miami, enrolled as many as they could. Like you I have lived in Northern cities and abroad, and racism is prevalent just as repugnant every where.

Yet every time I visit the South, I have been treated with nothing but good manners and great times from great people from blacks, asians, hispanics, and whites in very diverse business and social situations. It has been that way for decades.

The South has grown up. Certain people haven’t.

Is this the same KA fraternity who had its Ole’ South Ball and paid African-American children to walk around in chains?

    Jimmy53,

I think you totally missed the point ddweer was trying to make. Either that or you choose to ignore it (which from your previous post seems more likely). What he/she was trying to get across is that racism shows its ugly face across every nation north to south. It is not just a problem of the “deep” south in our country, it is a problem all across our country and many others. I have not had the pleasure to live abroad and have pretty much lived in ohio my whole life, however, I have had the pleasure of traveling abroad and have visited many places from small towns to large cities. There are two things that I have seen in every single one of those places. 1) good people (of all races and religions) and 2) ignorant racist people (of all races and religions).

So to be so narrow minded as to think that it is more prevalent in the southern states than anywhere else is just foolish (either that or you are very prejudice of them). I don’t make it a point to bash people on this site especially when it is for sports related content but you have gone beyond that and really did make yourself seem like a “Mental Midget” with that last post. G’Day sir and I hope whatever hate you have for people of the southern states isn’t preached and pushed on to others as that obviously just adds to the problem and will not make it better.

    Jimmy,

Oh you provided me with a belly rolling laugh with “And to paraphrase my earlier statement: ddweer, with your words “You show the world exactly who you are.”

Yes, I did show the world exactly who I am. I am a man who was raised in Illinois, went to College in S.C., then was stationed across the Deep South as a military officer and eventually decided to stay south of the Mason-Dixon Line when left the service and earned a graduate degree. I am a person who was raised in a town that was far more racist than the community I currently live in outside of Jackson. I am the person that has personally felt discriminated against during my life because of my background. I am a person who knows racism isn’t a regional affliction and one dimensional. I am a person who not only believes that education is the best cure to the racial angst that continues to plague our nation but has instilled that in my 4 children. Lastly, I am a person who will not condone an obvious racially insensitive tweet by a teenager nor turn a blind eye towards a pitiful attempt to justify his actions than to hold him responsible!

That Jimmy, is who I am! You sir or madam are exactly what I stated before, an ignorant individual who blows smoke and uses mirrors to deflect the true issue at hand. In short you proved my point that you are the “mental midget” I claimed you were.
